I pray my kids turn out the way my siblings and I did and not like today's generation

I don't know what my parents did right but I pray I'm doing the same things they did because neither myself nor my siblings were or are into drugs, we each have good jobs, can pay for our own things, don't need our parents to help out and are just overall self-sufficient adults.
I hear so many stories and even see it for myself with some cousins and other friends who have to get help from their parents because they can't pay for their own shite, even with families of their own. How this happens, I don't have the exact answer but I suspect it's because my parents let us fail when we needed to fail growing up and taught us the value of a dollar by making us work while in high school to pay our own car insurance and other stuff like that. Of course they helped with various things while we were in school but for the most part we paid for a lot of our own things even then.
One of my big fears as a parent is that I'm not raising my kids to be the same as my siblings and I are. I try my best but I always have that nagging concern in the back of my head that I'm doing something or not doing something that I don't realize and that today's societal norms will be stronger than my parenting. I want them to be good people who are capable of making it on their own without being into drugs or anything like that. Am I asking too much in this day and age? Scares the hell out of me as a parent if I'm being honest. I look at today's youth and their decision-making abilities and it terrifies me.

Dear Diary....
People have been saying this since the dawn of time. Breaking news, there's a ton of shitty people out there.

Raise them right and they will be fine. Teach them to work hard and let them know nothing is free.
Too many parents want things to be easy for their kids. Make them do hard things. Don't know if you have boys or girls, but make them get outside; teach them to hunt and fish and appreciate everything they have.

me either and me too

I think this is the key - failure is part of it all - learn to fail as a child so you can learn how to win as an adult

Seems like that's just part of it all too - I'm with you and try to just accept that it's never going away - those that came before me say it never will and I trust them

Worried about this too but, per my 18 yo daughter, nothing is stronger than that.....if it worries you you're addressing it and it will be ok - they will be prepared

I believe you have a better chance of turning out productive citizens with better parenting….BUT I think there are exceptions.

Sadly, the truth of the matter is no matter how well you raise them and try to instill good values to help them in life, once they are on their own and making their own decisions, some of them go the wrong way.
All you can then hope for is they learn their lesson and straighten their lives out and become productive people.

You are a person who desperately seeks attention from an anonymous message board, who needed the OTs help to figure out if your outside faucet was frozen. I'd be hoping my kids turn out way better than me if I was you.

You make 50+ decisions a day that play a part in determining your fate.
