but I think they deserve their own thread.

Baton Rouge Population
2000 227,818
2010 229,493 0.7% increase
Est. 2016 227,715 -0.8% decrease

EBR Population
2000 412,852
2010 440,171 6.6% increase
Est. 2016 447,037 1.6% increase

The city of Baton Rouge has lost population since 2000 (approximately 103 people). It isn't growing despite claims by the establishment and millions of dollars spent to improve Downtown and Mid City, etc.

The Parish is growing some (34,185), but that growth has slowed down despite the good parks and recreation system, and the good library system. 9,000 plus of those 34,185 live in Central or Zachary. EBR Parish hasn't seen double digit growth since the 70s when it went up 28% that decade. That was 38 years ago.

Ascension Parish since 2000
2000 76,627
2010 107,215 39.9% increase
Est. 2016 121,587 13.4% increase

Gained 44,960

Livingston Parish since 2000
2000 91,814
2010 128,026 39.4% increase
Est. 2016 140,138 9.5% increase

Livingston gained 48,324

Now what do these parishes have that EBR doesn't have? Big police force, parks, schools, roads, highways, bike paths, a big Downtown? No, they have good, stable public school systems that most children attend.

We can keep talking about a Tram, bike paths, street diets, and a new zoo, but until we start growing the population and stop the bleeding out of good families; EBR is going to be in trouble.

Has the metro area as a whole grown in that time? EBR's problem is public schools outside of Central and Zachary.

Does anyone think the flooding will have an impact on how Livingston and Ascension develops?

Fix the schools.

It's not quite that simple... but it almost is.

Taxpayers fleeing a city where their tax dollars are miss allocated and go towards programs that don't address the underlying issues regarding crime and gun violence? People would someday get tired of this and decide to move away?

Who'd have thought?

And what do they not have, which is the main contributing factor as to why they have decent public schools?

Livingston has a Bass Pro Shop and a shite load of trailer parks.

ETA: And lots of meth.

Neighborhood schools. Neighborhood schools. Neighborhood schools.

And with that St. George will go away too.

Everyone should be in favor of this.

North Baton Rouge and the federal government are generally against it.

As the creep continues down Florida and across it, the flight continues to certain outer parts of the city, as well as Livingston and Ascension Parish.

I see what you are saying but it should be noted that those population numbers reflect where people live, not where they work or visit. A lot of people live in surrounding parishes but work, shop, visit, etc EBR quite frequently
