You do realize that you can still be friends, hang out with people, have conversations with people, etc who share different political views than you right?
If you let your politics influence who you associate with, determine what you will or will not do, etc then you might want to evaluate things.

It actually is harder now because people have turned political beliefs into a moral issue. The other side isn't just wrong they're immoral because of what they believe.

This is a large part of it.
I have friends on both sides of the political aisle. I've also kicked people from both sides to the curb because they are batshit insane due to their political beliefs. But, there have been far more of the batshit nutters on the left than the right.
