I do not currently have a GS. I have owned several in the past including the near rite of passage Snowflake. I ahve also written a Tolstoy level of words in the epic Rolex vs GS and Patek etc vs GS threads on WUS.
I have a huge amount of respect for them. The extreme vertical integration of the company (as inhouse as inhouse gets, though I put less importance on that than many do) along with the very Japanese artisan way in which the small numbers are produced.
For me I find them boring. On a micro level they are very cool especially the dials. I am not a fan of the Spring Drive but do love the hi-beat. For me to get excited about a GS I need to be wearing a loupe or looking through a microscope. On the macro scale (2-3 feet away on my or another wrist) they bore me to tears. But that is just my subjective opinion. They just don't make me giggle like a kid when I put them on.
Damn good watch, generally very underrated and usually a dead give away someone is a true watch aficionado. I'll speak to a random stranger with a GS, I won't look twice at a Rolex (unless it was vintage).
I equate a GS to the OG NSX, it is damn near perfect for what it actually is but it will never have the joie de vivre of a Ferrari 348. Yes, one has warts and flaws but just raises my heart rate. The Swiss watches and occasional Glasshute region watch just move me.
The GS is the perfect watch for a pragmatic, contrarian geek.

Just get a 116600 (SD 4000) the last of the 40mm Sea Dwellers and it doesn't have a cyclops but does have a date. It sets itself apart from the hordes of Subs with tons of subtle differences.
It would stretch your budget and I should mention the prices are all over the place since people can't decide whether it will be collectable since the new 126600 is a very different watch.

now that you mentioned glashutte, i would urge the OP to look at Nomos. they make a fine watch and are virtually all well within budget. i'd take a look at them, too.

What did you end up with OP?

We ended up passing on the more expensive luxury watches for now, as I decided it's something I'll look at for our one year anniversary or fifth. Eventually I'll get a nice one.
Any profits I take from my small play around investment account will go toward purchase of Rolex. I'm up about $1400 in profit over the past week.
We ended up buying a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Automatic Blue Dial and two Citizen watches for everyday use. I think for all three it was like 2K.

I have always liked the design language of the three hand Aquaracer. Along with Oris Aquis and Sixty Five the Aquaracer is one of my favorite Swiss dive watches that are budget friendly.

no, nope.
Don't go too overboard, even with Rolex newest generation of movement (3235) are really not "better" than the Grand Seiko movements. In fact, I'll take a GS Hi-beat over a 3235. Plus if you are into the look of the movement the GS movements are much better finished (in a traditional way) than the Rolex movements which are rather utilitarian in comparison. Some people also really appreciate the Spring Drive movement, though I am not really one fo them I do respect it.
GS makes some fantastic movements and watches and some of their finishing techniques are at the level of Swiss/Glashutte Haute Horlogeire. Thier Zaratsu polishing, porcelain dials and the polish they get on titanium are essentially as good as it gets.
While someone may not like their style (I don't) the actual movements and quality of their finishing punches well above their price points and needs no apologies when compared to any of the Swiss/Glashutte mid-level brands like Rolex.

my new sd43 is keeping -1+ seconds a day which is pretty good. my older seadweller and daytona not so much
.back in the 80's i had a 190$ Seiko dive watch that was spot on, never should have sold that one

Seiko Credor Grand Sonnerie owes nothing to any watch company at any level. Seiko has the Lexus attitude for luxury watches, GS's may not be as eye catching as a S-class MB or the name recognition of Bentley but absolutely better engineered.

What are your thoughts on the glidelock clasps? Should every sport model have it?

When Omega introduced their METAS standards Rolex was "forced" to adopt a higher standard than COSC, which they did. Currently, Omega, Rolex and Patek have the highest regulation standards and save a lucky oddball from another manufacturer are the best regulated from the factory.

You also can't go too far the other direction either. GS are indeed very well engineered but there are quite a few houses that build to a much higher level. GS vs X are among the longest and most divisive threads on watch forums, sometimes they are the most interesting as well.

The best sport bracelet made. However, the argument can be made that it would move the price of some models up too much, if you look at the parts prices to see how much more expensive they are.
I am lucky I am not very sensitive to fit (I wear so many varied watches) and don't swell much so I get along fine with a wide variety of bracelets but the Glidelock always amazes me. The best example is on the DSSD, there is no reason that a tapering bracelet on such a monster of a watch should be as comfortable as it is.

I’ve been trying to move my JLC navy chrono, can’t give it away.

The Navy SEALs Chrono will probably have to be under $7k to move even minty with box and papers. The three hander seems to be easier to flip since they almost never seem to come up for sale, I see the Chronos "all the time".
