I met a real American hero

I was at the cancer clinic. Two men walked in, one elderly and the other (son) helping the dad. The man was hard of hearing and vision impaired among other things. We sat close to each other in the blood lab. He said he was almost 96 years old. He was wearing a hat or cover that said Iwo Jima. He was there in the Navy helping to get Marines on the beach. I don't know his name or much more but God bless him.

We are getting short on those fine men.

Bless him and it's great to acknowledge his contribution to our lives.

We are definitely getting too short on WW2 heroes, but don't think we don't have many from after that aren't just as heroic or patriotic.

The biggest American hero I’ve ever personally met passed away recently. He was the grandfather of a friend of my son. I think he was 101. He was the most decorated officer of the 82nd Airborne and was in the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Market Garden. 1 of only a handful of people to ever singlehandedly take out a Panzer tank. Even when he was in his mid to late 90s, he had an incredible presence and aura about him - when he spoke, you listened. You knew you were in the presence of greatness. He wrote an amazing book about his personal WW2 experiences also.

My now late father-in-law was also in the Navy during WWII and was one of those boat pilots that got troops to the beaches in the Pacific as they were island hopping.
He never talked about it and the only way his kids finally found out was when he passed and they went through his personal papers he kept locked up in a strongbox.
He joined the Navy at age 16 in 42 when he lied about his age. Truth is, I've seem pictures of him back then with his family and they looked to be something out of the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma and all the kids looked much older than their real age.
The old guy died in 2011 and is sadly missed by his family.

Is the book still in publication? I’d love to get a copy.

Way to ruin a good thread
Salute to an American hero. It’s sad that we are running out of these great men. They’re called the Greatest Generation for a reason

My paw paw fought in Germany and all throughout Europe. He died just as few years ago at almost 100. My great uncle was a Marine and fought in the Pacific, including Okinawa and some pretty ugly battles. He died when I was 20. Both great men.

In a year where hero is definitely overused, this is a true hero, God bless him.
