The flip side is why do you think BR doesn't have nice streets, flooding protection, good Brex Mex and a Loop?

I have traveled the world, and lived in quite a few places. 48 states (missing AK and ND) and I think 37 countries.

I could list a lot of gripes about Baton Rouge.

But this board takes the bitching to a level that is hard to justify. My experience, and I think Baton Rouge has some real problems, some can be fixed, but many can't.

But the O-T is on balance, WAY too hard on Baton Rouge, when honestly comparing it to ALL other options.

Part of the problem was the diehard BR crew which wanted to compete with Nola and Houston on here tbh

I'm a life long resident of BR btw

When I was there for grad school, the football team said it was the vet school burning dead dogs and cats.

If you manage to be able to afford to live relatively close to where you work in a relatively safe neighborhood and make at least a relatively conserted effort to find things to do around town and involve yourself in the community, Baton Rouge can be a relatively enjoyable place to live.

If you have a shite commute, it will make you want to eat a bullet.
If you can’t afford to live someplace safe, you probably will.

Fair enough, but Baton Rouge has never been and was never on track to be Chicago, Miami, or Houston. From the way it’s frequently described here you would think it was Ferriday.

It wasn’t that long ago that Baton Rouge, Austin, and Nashville were all close to the same size. Look where they are now compared to where Baton Rouge is. I wonder how closer BR would be to Austin if not for shitty small town-minded government for 25 years, Judge Parker’s annihilation of the public school system, and the 80’s oil crunch shuddering Louisiana’s economy so bad that it completely missed out on Reaganomics.

I, like most, see where BR is headed under the current crop of clowns ruining/running the city.

I'm trying to get out to salvage what I have built up in equity.

Well there are a lot of jobs around BR right now, you’ve got LSU sports, some good restaurants and you are somewhat centrally located to access the southern half of this state.

Baton Rouge absolutely has its issues but a huge thing that pisses people off is all the wasted opportunity squandered by our color blinded leadership

People that have the opinion that Baton Rouge is not so bad have never really lived anywhere outside of LA, MS, AR, or AL.

Any place where you are forced to send your kid to a private school is a perfect sign that you are living in a shithole.

I wouldn't put my kid in an inner city public school in almost any city in the South

I enjoyed my time in Baton Rouge and think fondly of the city and want the state to do well.

I've just been blown away by the difference in Baton Rouge and the suburbs of Houston where I live.

Constantly upgrading infrastructure, great public schools, lower cost of living. Half the area seems like it's from Louisiana. The amount of Cajun in the name of the restaurants is getting out of control though.

In the early 2000's Baton Rouge officials were in Austin every year studying the downtown area.
Now seems like every year there is a group looking at the ISDs.

yeah i experienced this at the tail end of my time in BR. hanging around some of the elite types who tried to sell BR way too hard

BR is a midsize southern city with all the problems that come with it. the issue, as stated previously, is the lack of a positive selling point to offset the negatives. it's a pretty big city is about all you got (but even that turns into a "it's large geographically, too")

BR is a violent, expensive city without a real selling point. it's not hell on earth but it can't compete with most similar cities
