What’s your definition of “super small”? I’ve seen races with 100 people that are won by someone who ran 19, 20 or even 21

Maybe I need to run in your area

Come on over. Your low 20s will be highly lauded

Maybe it’s differences in elevation. It’s hilly as hell around here. I dunno, but unless it’s a massive race or there are a lot of kids running, I don’t see a lot of times significantly under 20

I was sucking wind after the first mile and somehow was able to make it to 1.5 before I had to stop. I was blazing for the first mile though, with my app telling me I was at a 9.30 pace.
This is exactly how i expected your first run to go because I've been there not too long ago. (see my post above predicting this very thing).
Regarding the girl, I suggest coming clean and then sticking with the race. Play it humbly. something along the lines of "I was trying to impress you, i was embarrassed about it, but I really want to run this race with you and I'll do my best to keep up with you"
in the Meantime, my prep advice for you would be to jog slowly for 1-2 miles today and Thursday at a pace slower than you expect to run on Saturday (somewhere around 10-10:30/min per mile. Do not run on Friday. you have a good idea to walk the course on Friday, which will help you manage your sense of distance to the finish line on race day. Wake up a couple hours before race time, and eat something very light (one piece of toast with Jelly and half a banana). This will put some sugar in your system with enough time to not be sloshing around your stomach.
On race day, run with the girl and gut it out. You should be able to keep pace for most of it and will likely bow out around mile 2 due to the heat. Tell her to keep going and meet her at the end. She'll appreciate the effort.

tell her to run her race pace, then run back to run you in

This is better than trying to keep up and talk to her and slow her down. If she's trained for this to better her time she will not appreciate you showing up out of shape and slowing her down talking to her trying to score. Let her run her own race.

a walking pace is 4 MPH and would take over 45 minutes to complete a 5K.

Go run 3.1 miles tonight, record it on an app, and post your results.

29 minutes is easy as hell as long as you aren't morbidly obese.
I got ten downvotes for this, proves everone is fat.

The good news is it is going to be nice and cool.
The bad news is you lied for no reason. Thst is just insane

OP is not fat and he’s in the for the fight of his life trying to do this

So really it just proves you’re unaware of people or running or both

you're not fat, and that's not a fast time. Don't be a pussy

OP, can you arrive early and run a warm-up mile? The trick is to get the heart rate up before the race begins, then your body will be all set to maintain a solid pace. Remember, a warm engine is more efficient than a cold engine.
I did not expect to receive eight downvotes and zero upvotes with my comment. The fastest 5k and 10k I ever logged came after I jogged/lightly ran before the start of the race. I didn't realize my advice was that bad.
Best of luck to the OP on Saturday. You got this!

5k in under 29 minutes can be done by senior citizens.

I want to see all these other couch potatoes in this thread saying it was a simple 10min/mile pace post their results.
I haven’t ran a 5k in a while since I usually run 4 to 5 miles at an average pace of around 8:30 at age 59. Right now, I have a bad knee and my pace is a little slower being around 8:45ish.
