I knew my insurance sucked, but I'm really seeing how much it sucks now that I need it

My premium is about $170/month, deductible is $10,000, and max out of pocket is $13,500.

I've been searching for the cost of orthopedic surgery to get my knee scoped and the estimates I'm seeing with my "so-called" insurance are outrageous. My god, I never thought I would have to come out over $9,000 to get this procedure done. This one procedure will wipe out 60% of what I have saved so far in the HSA for the entire family. I guess, I'll be walking with that gangster lean limp for a while

So the cost of a traditional family health insurance plan?

Posts like this make me so thankful I have a $40 copay for specialists with zero deductible zero co-insurance, and a $2,500 out of pocket max. If I have surgery, the most I’ll have to pay in a worst case scenario is $2,540.

Is that the premium for your entire family?

Went thru the same BS with a specialist a few weeks back.
He wants to schedule a precautionary colonoscopy due to family history and I tell him I'll have to see how much it'd cost.
"Don't you have insurance? What's your deductible?"
"$3500".
"Oh, that's not bad. It won't be much out of pocket past that...."
$350/mo for this nonsense that I can't even use without doubling the yearly premiums. I don't understand how parents can sleep knowing their kids are one stupid life lesson away from a $10k medical bill/yr.

$170 is insanely low. The average cost for a family of 4 is around $1100 monthly. Sounds reasonable considering.

I don’t know how most families do it with premiums that high. At $507/month total for my entire family of 4, I feel like I’m paying too much but I know it’s a lot less than what most pay.

It’ll be the best $3500 you ever spent if they find a polyp that’s about to get cancerous.

My wife and I decided about a month or two ago that we wouldn't make the deductible unless something tragic happened, so we decided to forego the $700/ month we were paying in premiums and just cancel the insurance. Only thing we've had since it dentist appointments for the kids, but the dental plan we had was also shite.

I agree

Just started my COBRA with dental for 600 a month… 3 k deductible

I had signed up for a shittey Obamacare plan for 400 a month with 8k deductible but canceled that

me and my wife are both healthy, non smokers, neither have any health issues, neither on any medication. Same with our little boy.

With work paying part of my insurance, I still come out of pocket for yearly premium almost $16k

That's dumb. You should be in a HDP and saving that money cash in a HSA up to the allowable limit. That way it can work like an investment and grow over time.

I think my total out of pocket can't exceed $8K for a family. You need to explore other options.

I think my family premium is $165 a month. Work pays around 600 I think.

SS if your family is that healthy youre throwing away money on premiums. Even at no out of pocket cost its a loser for you. You'd be better off with a low cost hdp with critical care insurance for catastrophe and youd probably still save $800 a month worst case

Tell them you don’t have insurance, you’re paying cash. Once they roll their eyes and start punching buttons on the computer, the confusion on their face is pricelesss.
