Unless I’m mistaken, the strong precedent is that this isn’t a thing. You can hold him accountable for replacement of the dog, and any bills related to the dog over this, but that’s it.
In the eyes of the law, dogs are property. You can’t sue for pain and suffering because a car you were super attached to with sentimental value got totaled.
