I'll say, people in Louisiana use some sketchy shoring methods. In Florida, everything way a trench box. I freaked out the first time I saw a pipe crew drive dunnage for shoring protection. I wouldn't get into the trench for damn near anything (the effluent didn't make things any more enticing).

If it's the original coolant, then it's probably got the Cat Extended Life Coolant (ELC). According to the O&M manual on C9's it's recommended that this coolant is changed every 12,000 service hours or every six years.
I'd say it's time for a flush & fill. Before doing this you could take a coolant sample and send it into your local Cat dealer and have them test it (S.O.S. Service). Also, when you do the flush, Liquid Cascade works great.

From what I've seen of the southeast markets, there's a glut of mini-HEX's out there for sale right now. And a lot of them are units that have been in rental fleets so a good deal of them have been rode hard and put up wet. I'd be very cautious if you're in the market right now.
