I don't remember the number, but Camille cause fatalities in VA. Generally, when you see Gulf Coast hurricane fatalities broken down by state, you only see the Gulf Coast states. Occasionally you might see fatalities in Arkansas, Tennessee or Georgia. Camille was still killing people in VA on her way back to the Atlantic.

My mom was a student at MSU during Camille. She said the Swamp Lot (a low ground parking lot) had multiple feet of water in it, which flooded a bunch of cars, and that it was the only time she had ever experienced true horizontal rain.

Riveting story, but I question any stories elderly people tell.
Kind of like how everyone’s grandfather was a WW2 hero and stormed the beaches of Normandy.

I spoke to a 98 year old veteran today. He flew with my Dad in the Pacific in WW2. Sharp as a tack. He was at Ford Island when the Japanese attacked. I hang on his every word.

Camille was the benchmark for hurricanes until Katrina.
There were plenty of people who stayed in Pass Christian for Katrina because their property didn't flood in Camille. Their baseline got adjusted in the worst kind of way. I doubt any of the ones who survived Katrina will ever stay again.

My parents met after Betsy in Baton Rouge. My dad was patrolling Downtown and Exxon with the National Guard at curfew and my mom's carload of curious gals town asked them for directions. He said 'go to hell!'
Then met up with them later.
Four years later, Camille fricked up their honeymoon in Biloxi.

Blah blah blah, I bet he over took a nazi death camp too, and ran his underwear up the flag pole. I’ve heard that story a few times myself.

That would be Andrew
Andrew didn't pack the storm surge of Camille and Audrey. It had incredible wind speed when it wiped out Homestead but didn't really strengthen in the GOM. That said I remember driving Hwy 90 to Houma and remember the araea approaching Morgan City had almost every leaf missing from the trees. It was like winter hit overnight.

I heard similar stories about Camille from my older relatives from south plaquemines parish.
My grandfather rode out hurricane Camille, Betsy,Katrina, and all other storms since he lived in Pilottown LA south of Venice for his 70+ years of his life (moved there as a teenager). He said Camille’s winds were incredible and way worse than any storm he has ever seen. Storm surge down there was like 10-12ft for Camille and 20+ft for Katrina. He recounted 200+mph gusts for Camille and 160-170mph gusts for Katrina.

Was he at Pilottown for Katrina? Wasn't that place under water?

This thread caused me to image search some of the damage and this photo popped up.

I think Camille killed about 250 people. I knew a bunch were killed in VA, but I had no idea it was that many. It sounds like more people died in VA than on the Gulf Coast.

There is a book about Audrey. Your FIL is a prominent character in it. I am looking for the book now.

A lot of youngsters won’t know this, but up until the last minute Camille was zeroed in on New Orleans. Only when it took that last minute jog slightly east did NOLA get spared the worst of the storm (sorry, Gulf Coast). This was good for me because I was 20 and lived in East NO, a block from Lake Pontchartrain, and as the storm was barreling in, I was occupied with a neighbor chick. We thought watching the trees blow from the bedroom window and making out simultaneously was cool. If Camille hadn’t veered east, we might not have lived to tell the tale. But that was long ago.

Sat in a house in Meraux for Camille and it was a little windy and rainy but, didn't seem that bad.
The room that we all sat in in that house was completely destroyed by Katrina.
