My uncle is on full disability from injuries he suffered in the War on Christmas. Bill O’Reilly got him all fired up, and he foolishly volunteered for service.

That’s not really true.
The thing is you know what the theme of these “holiday” ads are. They’re uniquely Christmas themed.

this topic is an OT Moderate / Atheist bat signal. They are offended you would even suggest asking this question.

I keep seeing advertisements for holiday tree lighting, holiday lights drive thru, etc
Sounds absolutely stupid
Can’t believe the word Christmas offends anyone. And if it actually does, who cares

No we aren’t; we find it fricking hilarious that some Christians are so lacking in self awareness that they bitch when they aren’t directly and specifically catered to as though it’s an indication that they are being discriminated against

effective bat signal

directly and specifically catered to

Josh, take the “holiday tree lighting” example right above your post. What do you call that tree when you put it up in your own living room? If the answer is “Christmas tree,” who exactly are you catering to?

And if a company advertised a “holiday menorah lighting,” would a Jewish guy need to feel discriminated against to ask what happened to the word “Hanukkah”? Or could he just think the wording sounds goofy?

I grew up calling it a Christmas tree. I see an ad calling it a “holiday tree,” and I wonder who decided that sounded better. Which part of that takes a persecution complex, Josh?

Channukah is actually celebrated by all Jews. They give gifts. Light candles and have dinners. It's not Yom Kippur or Rosh Hassanah but it's still big.
Easter is the biggest holiday for practicing Christians. But when you take in secular holidays it's 4th or 5th

What's funnier to me is that someone is complaining about something that is very much not in the actual vein of what Christmas should be.

Belle, if I give the cashier at Kroger shite for telling me “Happy Holidays,” then you’ve got a point. She wished me well, and I ought to do the same.

But I can celebrate the birth of Christ and still chuckle at a “holiday tree lighting.” You knew which holiday they meant. So did I. What exactly is out of step with Christmas about asking why they couldn’t just call it a Christmas tree?

The OP is talking about a store catalog. You don't find the irony in that?

But to entertain what you said, who is widely calling it a "holiday tree lighting"? In the bastion of major blue cities, New York City, they still call it the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree (and Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony).

I call it a Christmas tree (and Christmas lights), because I was raised a Christian in America, so that’s the cultural association I have. I’m not catering to anyone; I’m catering to my own cultural history.

I have no idea, though considering that Judaism is both a religion and a culture, that gets messy. Then again, one could argue that Christianity is now similar. I can ask my Jewish brother in law if you’d like, though

You can think it sounds better all you’d like; that doesn’t require a persecution complex. On the other hand, OP says he throws every catalog in the trash if it doesn’t say Christmas. Are you really saying you believe you and he are analogous?

To go outside directly answering your questions: humans have celebrated the winter solstice since time immemorial. Using evergreens in those celebrations goes back to time immemorial. In the early United States, Christians either heavily discouraged or outright banned the modern celebration of Christmas as secular and non-Biblical. So it kind of blows my mind that some Christians have apparently so heavily leaned into the secular parts of the holiday that anyone celebrating those secular bits without caring or acknowledging the religious bits is offensive to them. Again, not all, and apparently not you, but certainly some, including apparently the OP.

That’s a bit fricking wild to me

Fair enough, Belle. You were talking about the catalog, and I gave you a tree lighting.

But one line in the OP did make me laugh. “Order in time for the holiday.” Which holiday, Belle?

“Holiday 2026” could cover half the calendar for all I care. Once you’re telling me when to order, though, you’ve got a date in mind. If we both know which one, what’s so funny about asking why they didn’t just say Christmas?
