Correction. Your friend is a woman.

Of course, like any other vehicle, modifications can be made. But if you were to pay to transform a Sport into a Rubicon, it would be more expensive than buying the Rubicon from the start. It's more than just a lift kit.

yes, college girls love 'em

What are the most common modifications that you would recommend to a new Wrangler owner? I have told Bob to get 35" tires with black wheels (with 2.5" lift) and maybe get steel bumpers. What else?

Buy the Rubicon. Seriously. The 2018 models are pretty significant in that it's the first time in a very long time that Jeep made quite a few changes to the Wrangler. The difference between a Rubicon and Sport or Sahara is going to become very important if / when it comes time to sell the vehicle. No one gets their money back on improvements made to a vehicle. They think they will, but they don't. Better to buy it off the lot as a Rubicon. If you really know what you're doing and what you want, you buy the cheapest Jeep on the lot and customize it - but you do that knowing you're going to keep it forever and that you will not get your money out of it. Buy a new Rubicon, have fun with it for a few years, and you'll get a great price if you sell it, particularly if it's a trade in.

If you're a tame off-roader, then a Sport with a better set of tires will do everything you want. You can get off road, take the top off and have a lot of fun. Forest Service roads, site seeing in national parks, weekend camping, hunting at the camp - rarely will you have a significant problem with a Sport. If things advance much beyond that, you will be glad to have a Rubicon.

Are Jeep Wrangler interiors really water proof?

Nope. Older Jeeps like the CJ and YJ were very much water resistant. Newer ones not quite as much.

Bob got leather seats.

Bob is a woman.

quote:

Bob is using this for his daily commute...he told me the Rubicon is heavier than other models, gets worse gas mileage and is much more expensive...that is why he got the Sahara.

Tell Bob to get herself a Prius then. I believe fuel economy is listed as being equivalent between the Sahara and Rubicon. Either Bob doesn't know what she's talking about or the car salesman treated Bob like a sucker.

I have had a CJ,YJ,XJ,XJ,TJ.

Do you really need electronic discos? I mean are people that lazy or if so just run discoed. Transfer case is the only thing I left off. Majority don’t need 4:1 or even come close to needing that low on the tcase. If so you can get take outs for cheap or an atlas twin stick for $3k

Only reason I would say a cj is more fun is they had v8s. Otherwise I can see any other reason.

Ah, you're one of those elitist guys. I get it. but before you blow your wad too soon (thinking you know my jeeping experience) and show your hand next time, remember what assumptions get ya, peckerhead.

CJs are a classic. I have no hate for them.

All "wrangler" models are real jeeps, despite what elitists tell you.

This....

Anything less than a Rubi with upgraded 4.56 gears, 38 Super Swampers and at LEAST 45% of the Quadratec catalog installed and your friend is Fruity-arse Bastard

This conversation feels like we have done it before and with Boost

You can get a very comparable Rubicon experience for the $3-4K range, but not all the way there.

Manual disconnects are a breeze, so no reason for anything more. You can beef up axle and slap in a locker for a reasonable price as well.

I still say Rubicons are worth the premium though, unless you are building a true bad arse rock crawler. Factory front and real lockers, stronger front axle, 4.10 gears (have manual) and 4:1 tcase all under factory warranty make it worth it.

For $10k you can go far beyond anything the rubi has and for 3-4K you can get equal to slightly better off-roading capabilities, just with less warranty and push button features.

I made that distinction earlier when just referring to off-road capability. However warranty also doesn’t cover trail use.

I had a 1980 CJ7. It was a beast. I loved that Jeep. Also had an old Ford Bronco. Those owners are even more elitists than old Jeep guys but with the costs to join that group, I can see why. I wasn’t sure how the new Jeep owners that have rides with a shite ton more bells and whistles felt about old CJs that you can spray out with a water hose.

I will own another one of those. Not sure which money pit I want to join though.

The only one of those features quoted that would matter as a dd is the 4.10 gears in the axle if you go bigger tire. But depending on how big might not matter because you might have to regear anyways

That’s because you were riding in an off-road tuned vehicle on pavement.

Same. If you're on the fence, get a CJ. If it's not for your daily driver... CJ all the way. You can work on it slowly throughout the course of your life, including a newer/stronger engine. Would be so much fun.

Absolutely. The JK/JL models have made them very solid daily drivers out of the box.

I mean, if you don't compare it to a 4runner or whatever smooth road drivers there are with independent suspension.

Wranglers are definitely gonna body roll, and be shitty/loud/move your arse around on bumps due to the solid axles... but just going down the road or making turns? No problem.

Yes it does, do not spread fake news. I jacked up some pulleys in a water crossing and Jeep covered it all under warranty.

No, you cannot.
