He says Michiganders believe themselves to be midwesterners. Someone please help understand this perception!

This is true. I don’t get it either

What else would they be?

Michigan has always been the mid-west in my experience.

This map reflects the Midwestern United States as defined by the Census Bureau. Where would you say Michigan is located?

The internet agrees with me.

Michigan is as Midwestern as Louisiana is Southern. It kinda has its' own vibe going on

Did you not learn that in school?
Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin has always been considered the Mid West. Always.

That’s because they are.

In what world is Michigan not midwestern?
It’s designated that way by the US Census Bureau, and colloquially by nearly everyone except you apparently.

Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and the rest of the states to the Pacific Ocean are called the Western 11.

From Detroit, it is about 600 miles to the Atlantic and 2100 to the pacific.
Math does not know the traditions of what something is called or what people feel something is. math just says what things are.
ETA: Detroit is about 80 miles east of Atlanta. Is Atlanta Midwest also? No.

I don’t consider Kansas and Nebraska to be Midwestern. That’s the Heartland

The only way Michigan is not Midwest is if you think the Great Lakes states are a separate and distinct area

I live in the northeast. South Jersey. Philadelphia is just about the last “northeast” city looking at the map. Everything west of that is Midwest. The majority of Pennsylvania is where is starts.
There is a strong difference.
Biggest wow moment for me was when I realized that Maryland is borderline “the south” amongst the locals. Coming from Louisiana and hearing “welcome to the south” was interesting.
—I should clarify. I am strictly speaking about the culture and social norms of the areas. For instance, Pittsburg is far more similar to, let’s say Cincinnati, than it is to any city from Philly/NJ up to Maine. Sure geographic area all of PA is considered the NE, but the west side is vastly different from eastern PA / Philly which begins “the northeast” when you are speaking about the people/society.

I've never heard this.
I group ID, MT, WY, ND, and SD all together as Crackerstan.

Whoever was supposed to teach you middle school geography failed miserably at their task and owes you an apology.
