No one enjoys seeing animals hurt unless they’re total weirdos.
But I grew up in a part of the country that’s full of people that enjoy killing cats.

I love hunting. It’s definitely a part of me, and I’m extremely grateful to harvest any game that I do. I’ve made poor shots in the past, and I’ve learned more about being an ethical and smart hunter from those bad shots then anything else. Anyone that harms an animal without reason is sick though.

I’ve gotten softer in my old age too. I still kill several deer and hogs every year. I taught my son we only kill animals to eat. Or venomous snakes, we kill all the ones we come across.
We see plenty of foxes, coyotes, bobcats, etc while hunting and we have never shot any.

I get it with the snakes. But really, how many people do you know that have been harmed by snakes?

main reason we domesticated cats
wildcats chose people.
people farmed grain.
rodents came for grain.
wildcats ate rodents.
this happened in the fertile crescent. iraq.

the Wildcats were good mousers not pets.
cats as pets were done in Egypt. another wildcat species. they were bred to be housepets and eventually were the love model in temple culture. individual cat owners paid to mummify 300,000 cats. <= ! the mouser wildcats and love cats interbred.
ireland didnt get cats until 900 ad. the norse sailors brought them to Dublin.

Any animal that has to chew on stuff to keep their teeth from growing into their skull/jaw…. can get fricked.

Having conversations with my kids recently has helped me better understand the line between slaughter/nurture
I think the instinct for both exists within us. We know that slaughter is a necessity in life, to protect and to nourish. We watch animals in our care do it. Predator and prey exist.
Wanton cruelty for cruelty's sake is not good. But to stray from our nature as Hunter/gatherers is to deny a part of our existence as well.
The duality of man. We raise, we nurture, we kill, we slaughter. The harvest has always been one of reaping life to grow life. We should respect what we harvest and not waste it. Death is as much a necessity as life.
Part of a cycle. Neither will survive without the other.
Balance and respect is the key, in all things.

We hunted to eat. I killed countless rabbits, deer, squirrels, etc. I've even rung my fair share of chicken necks.
The complete opposite of myself, but I also realize what the real world is about. I’ve killed one large animal in my life, a deer 22 years ago and I still think about her eyes before she died. The difference is, 22 years ago the meat from that deer wasn’t necessary for my family to survive but if survival came down to that I wouldn’t think twice about it.

Just a couple. One that comes to mind was squirrel hunting and when he put his hand on the ground to stand up, a copper head struck him on the hand. Another guy was popped by a rattler hunting in west Texas. It was his fault though, he was poking at the snake with a stick.
I was friends with the lead Herpetologist at La WLF and he told me killing a snake here and there has no impact on the overall population. It just makes me feel better knowing there is 1 less.

Watching crocs eat zebras or wild dogs ripping apart its prey on YT is very entertaining.

I let the bobcats and badgers go but I’ll shoot a coyote in a second.
I still don’t have a problem killing anything but I’m very selective on what I kill outside of hogs and yotes.

quote:Jesus man, it’s a fricking rodent. Get over it.
A few weeks ago someone set out a sticky trap at work and caught a mouse. I accidentally killed it trying to free it and felt like shite. I think we just get softer in our old age.
I don’t needlessly kill innocent animals, but if they invade my home, they signed their death warrant. I don’t kill insects unless it’s wasps. I let spiders live and love looking at their webs in my camellias.
Animals live and die daily, it’s the circle of life. One animal’s death provides life for another. Mother Nature is a bitch.

Similar experience here.
Rodents chewed the wiring harness on my Accord. There were only 3 available in the entire United States at the time. $2500 insurance claim plus had to drive a rental for a month.
Having worked in pest control, I hate rodents. nasty creatures. Only good rodents are dead ones.
