Foods that contain high amounts of Oxalates such as almonds, spinach, kale, berries, etc..., all healthy foods.
So is Sweet Potatos and Coco powder.
Which both of those I love.
I would drink Caco Powder every morning because it helps.
But, I might tone it down bc I dont want anymore stones anywhere near me.
My diet is mainly coffee and water, use to be sweet tea. But I had to let that go. I will still go on a sweet tea binder from time to time.

I’ve had about 20 of them. The first two or three scared me to death due to the pain in n my early 20s.
30 years later when I feel one I don’t even go the dr or hospital. I just start drinking a ton of water to move them through

Are you always able to flush them out? How can you tell when it starts happening?

Gotta watch that calcium and vitamin D intake.
Yes and no.
My endocrinologist actually has me taking 1000 I/U of vit D daily due to an overactive parathyroid that can stones.
Also, vit C is fine, just not supplements, like Emergen C.

So far I’ve always been able to pass mine without surgery. Some folks aren’t as lucky.
Usually it’s back pain and a tremendous need to pee but can’t.
I passed one last month. Woke up in the middle of the night. Back hurt, needed to pee but couldn’t. And for the first time ever I felt a crazy need to shite. Say on the toilet for 30 minutes and nothing. It was weird

I'm pretty sure I dealt with it back in the Spring. I had dealt with them moving, I guess, in the past and had some pain. This time it was brutal.
I started having pain in my left nut and general abdominal area around 8:30pm. I got a shower and started to go to bed. I just sat on the side bed for a bit, kind of just feeling the pain and wondering what it was. I laid down on my back and read for a bit. I turned out the light, rolled over on my side......and BAM the pain kicked up significantly. I tossed and turned until about 4am, I was never able to get into a position that didn't hurt. I decided to get up and the suffering started.
It felt like I had been kicked in the left nut, specifically, but the pain stayed at its peak and wouldn't subside. I felt like I had to constantly pee, but not much came out. I hurt terribly in my bladder and up into my abdomen. My abs were tensed constantly. I couldn't sit for long, stand for long......so I just paced. Back and forth, back and forth in the living room. I was drinking water and having to pee, but still......not much. I called into work and tried to lay back down at around 8:30am. Nope. As soon as I went horizontal the pain ratcheted up. Turned to my side and it was worse.
I got back up and paced. I kept pacing a while and sitting a while. The pain never eased. Time passed, eventually making it past lunch with no relief. I promised I would go to the ER if I wasn't feeling any better by 2pm. Well, I paced and sat and paced and sat, up and down for another couple of hours. I finally was able to lean back in the recliner at around 2pm, still hurting. At some point I dozed off. It seemed like it was for a few hours, but I'm told it was only for ten minutes or so. I woke up, and the pain had lessened, but I really, really had to piss. I didn't want to chance moving. I didn't want to kick the chair down and try standing out of fear it would come back. The pain in my nut was now just a dull ache, and the bladder pain was almost gone. My abs were still tense. At something to 3pm, not able to hold it any longer, I stood up to go to the bathroom. It started like it had been, slow. Then, I began to piss like I've never pissed before and the pain just......stopped. I didn't see a stone, though. I was still achey, but a 2 instead of a 10 on the pain scale. I went back and sat down, found the spot I was in where I wasnt hurting, and took a nap. That was about 16 hours of the worst pain I've ever had.
That was it. My abs hurt for about two days, like I had done a boatload of crunches. They were sore when I moved. Nothing else, though.
That's my suspected kidney stone story. I hope don't have another.
ETA: When I was typing all of that my abs were subconsciously tightening. I didn't even notice it.

Had lithotripsy last Wednesday but the broken pieces are hitting me harder than Carnival Cruisers hit the buffet on crab leg night.
After a dozen earlier in life I went fifteen years without one.
Oh man, sorry to hear this. One of the most painful 12 hours of my life was dealing with passing a kidney stone. I was at work and suddenly felt like I was going to burst and pee my pants. Ran to the bathroom and couldn't get a drop out. On the commute home I was hit with massive pain and couldn't get comfortable in any position. Got to the ER and they gave me three IV's and then the thing finally broke loose and I passed it.
They did a scan and I had a couple 5mm ones waiting to go. I did everything to avoid having to pass them including acupuncture. Thankfully they seemed to go away.
It sounds odd, but I highly recommend acupuncture. They did a study in 2023 that found that acupuncture was more effective than conventional analgesics for pain relief from them.

i've passed 2.
no bueno
the second one was easier because i was prepared for the pain that time around.
the first one
the second one actually got stuck coming out of my penis while i was peeing in my office urinal all of a sudden my piss started going crazy like someone put their thumb over the end of a water hose and i looked down and was like WHAT IN THE HELL and pulled it out, rinsed it off and gave it to my dr.
sorry TMI
anyway, good luck. worst pain ever.
I have the passing down to a science: when I sense the end is near, I drink a huge decaf with bourbon at bedtime and then hold it for at least 10 hours. That thing EXPLODES out at the end.

As a matter of fact, some form calcium is recommended to eat along with foods high in Oxalates.
Yes, calcium oxalate stones can be caused be too LITTLE calcium.
But it's TOO MUCH oxalate that causes them the most. You should AVOID foods high in oxalates, with spinach being the biggest offender by an order of magnitude.

No, not always. I had one I was dealing with until it got to the point I was doubled over most of the day. I hit the ER and they did a scan and told me the stone was so big it was totally blocking my urinary tract and if I didn't have it removed it could do serious damage to my kidneys.
And if you ever get one, believe me, you'll know. Mine start as lower back pain, usually dull but uncomfortable. As the stone moves in the urinary tract it can get extremely painful since the stones I pass look like bits of coral with ridges, spikes and holes in them and they irritate the soft tissue of the urinary tract.
When they get close to being passed they will have you feeling like you need to pee like a racehorse and when you try it's usually squirt, drip, dribble and done.
When the ones I can pass finally make an exit I'm almost always having trouble peeing and then all of a sudden I can feel it making its way out the old Johnson and once it clears I pee like a firehose and breathe a big sigh of relief.
Yeah, they're fun like that.

I'm jealous of all of you who pass it within a day or two of first symptoms. Typically I feel a soreness in one kd my testicle, kind of like blue balls. Not severe, but enough to notice. Comes and goes, then I'll staty getting the flank pain that goes builds to juat debilitating pain. Writhing on the floor type shite. Doesn't go away until I go to the ER and get put on the cocktail for a cool 8 grand a trip.
That goes on for a month or two until I finally pass it. Nothing breaks the pain but a heavy dose of T3 and vicodens.
Once it drops into the bladder all the pain is gone and it passes in a day or two of heavy violent. I've passed two, both only 2.5mm each, but it's just a horrific ordeal that takes up the better part of a quarter of the year.

Reading this thread just makes me queasy. I have never had one that I know of and I am 35. This year in the dove field a friend of mine's dad had one hit him (he apparently gets them frequently). That man WENT DOWN. He couldn't move or walk. Just said well its hospital time, call my wife to come get me.
Made me sick for him. He is a tough old guy too.

its that journey from the kidney to the bladder that will get you!

I have had 17 lithotripsies so far and am fighting a stone now. Plus I have a pill bottle half full of stones I have recovered myself.
I have passed stones on three continents, on multiple golf courses, and at 38,000 feet in an airplane. I can't say it has all been fun.

I've passed 3 many years apart. Only the 1st was agony but only 2 hours. 2nd was painful but tolerable for 3 days. 3rd was just occasional high back pain over 45 days. Each time the early tipoff symptom for me was a slight burning during urination and slight discomfort in the bladder. By slight I mean so little that I could ignore it. This was a day before the main event. The intermittent back pain is similar to gas pain. I did not see a doctor for 1 & 2 but had imaging during 3 to track progress.

it never eased up and i was driving home and suddenly i had to pull over to a gas station and i was out of the car sitting square on my arse on the pavement. that was #1 and its a pain i'll never forget.
my brother drove us to an urgent care because i had no idea what was going on and they immediately said it was more than likely a kidney stone and sent me for an mri at the old Wilsons/Service Merchandise on Louisville.
just a laid back place with some good ol baws & bawettes and they came out right away with the photos and showed me i had one on its way out and another one chilling deepr in the kidney ready to strike at some unknown time.
of course my doctor was 'technically' the person who was supposed to review the imagery and he did, but the tech was spot on.

Drink a lot of water and lay on your stomach. And try to sleep on your stomach.
Or
Sleep with the affected side elevated. About 30 degrees or so. .
It will help you pass the stones if they aren't too big.

I agree!! Had to have one surgically removed, it was 9 mm I believe! Passed another one a year later that literally "clanked" on the tub when I passed it. I now take Flo-max everyday, no matter if I feel like I have one or not. Haven't had any issues since I started taking Flo-max.
