I had breakfast with a USS Liberty survivor this morning

Had a very interesting conversation with the USS Liberty survivor at breakfast this a.m.
He is adamant that the government is full of b.s. on this one. Said the Israeli's clearly knew the USS Liberty was our ship (for example, they shot up the antennas and those numerous antennas would not have been on a freighter).
Also says that the incident came exceedingly close to provoking a nuclear exchange and that this is the primary reason why they government won't tell the true story.

It was war, blue on blue happens. RIP to the dead of the Liberty.

It was clearly intentional. Israel did not want the Liberty listening in during the six day war.

It's crazy how that incident is swept under the rug for pure politics. When was that? 68,69? Not that long ago.

I worked late last night and was multi-tasking.

Crazy to think how well war ships are built

BS Hop a train, you confirmed liar. I bet you weren't even alive when it happened.

I don't doubt that the Israelis knew who they were attacking and it has been swept under the rug for the sake of PR, but a nuclear exchange between who?
Certainly not the US and Israel. Even if they were ardent enemies Israel had only tested their first nuke in Dec. of 1966.
Why would their be an exchange between the US and the USSR because of this incident? They didn't think it was a Soviet attack at first did they?

Best to engage brain before engaging mouth -
NW Louisiana USS Liberty Survivor
I never met the man before this morning but he lives in Grand Cane.

It was difficult to follow at times because there was another old timer there who kept interjecting.
He thought it was an Egyptian attack at first.
I have the impression that the nuclear exchange issue did not have any direct connection with the attack but that the nuclear exchange issue would come up should the truth be told.
The only fact I could hear without interference was that at least one nuke armed jet was launched from the US carrier and that it could not return to the carrier because it was nuclear armed. Therefore, it was diverted to a land base, probably in Spain.

It's amazing how few know this story and of those that do know the story believe the attack was intentional.....including me.

The breakfast.....it was in an old box car, right? Was it cold, dusty, noisy?

He said that the Egyptian freighter that the Liberty was "mistaken for" was much smaller and lighter than the Liberty, didn't have an American Flag flying from the mast, and did not have all the antenna systems (which were specifically targeted by the Israelis).
I could see the Israelis not wanting a ship around that could listen in on them.
