I don’t like to judge other parents, but some parents make it hard.

I coached my son’s 6U Little League team last season. After a couple of weeks of letting the kids learn the basics, we started keeping score and counting outs. One of the moms on the team sent out a group text to our team stating that she didn’t like keeping score because the game shouldn’t be about who wins or loses and that she didn’t like counting outs because she couldn’t stand to see a six-year-old be sent to the bench for getting out. I tried to explain that kids are more resilient than that and that it is difficult to teach the kids the rules when they are allowed to stay on base even when they are out. She then said that if we absolutely had to keep score, could we just not put it up on the scoreboard where the losing team had to see it. Her comments blew me away. Like, WTF, lady.
But then it gets better. She actually allows her son to quit a team sport midseason because his feelings got hurt when he was called out. Rather than using it as a teachable moment, she just allowed him to quit. And the best part of all is that she would never admit to me that she let her son quit. She acted like he would come to every game, but at the last minute, she would come up with some BS excuse for why he couldn’t be there. I don’t know what you could possibly do to help a kid growing up in that environment. This is a family full of people who can’t own their shite.

And the boys in that family are giants. They would make incredible O-lineman down the road, but I doubt they will ever be allowed to touch a football field.

People like that must have never played sports and don’t understand the value of winning and losing.

Single her kid out by making sure everyone knows her kid is above the rules. Let him hit an in the park home run every time and be super loud about making sure everyone knows not to get her kid out. A good sarcastic public shaming will do wonders.

Most of the other parents supported my position that we should keep score and count outs at that age. This lady just thought kids are so fragile. And her son was insanely athletic for his huge size. He could be one hell of an athlete with better direction at home.

He was around and helped at some practices, but he was apparently okay with the kid quitting a team sport mid season.

Contrast this story with the crazy arse 9U travel ball dads who think little Jaxson needs to play in 35 tournaments every year, goes to separate coaches for hitting, pitching, and catching lessons, and thinks the kids on his team who play other sports through the year aren’t dedicated enough and are costing Jaxson signing bonus money every weekend.

Why can’t people just be somewhere in the middle?

Sorry - don’t know what to say. I played various sports all my life - and I’ve put my kids in a few things - but the way sports are handled through schools and other organizations is ridiculous

It’s like the choice for a normal kid who just wants to learn the rules and play are either special olympics or the pros - nothing in between (which someone said above)

Little League is usually a good place to learn about baseball. It is competitive, but it isn’t ridiculous.

I’m a mom and completely agree with you.

And don't get me started on quitting midseasonb. Never happened in our house — not finishing a season wasn't allowed. You didn’t have to try out the next year, but quitting wasn’t happening.
