North America had approximately 60,000,000 bison/buffalo/tatanka before 1492.
By 1890, they had been hunted virtually to extinction, with only a few thousand left.
Always been amazed that slow cows made it to 2014.

Who wins with a buffalo vs. a bison? I've heard buffalo are much more aggressive, so that's what I'd go with.

Buffalo have terrible hair.

An elk is also MUCH bigger than I ever realized in person. Moose as well. Gotta love the American West.

Prairieville was home to one of the largest herds in the South.

There's a grass area where a bunch of them herd. Very incredible in size, cool animals too.

Bison - some size advantage in general and other advantages in pure strength and speed
They are insanely agile with tough skin and a heavy dense head. I had to help handle a young bison and we tried to wrangle it in a shoot like you would a bull. The stupid thing wasn't near full grown (only 450 pounds for a young male is still very small) but still hopped around like a small dog when we were getting ready to squeeze him up to take blood etc (it actually jumped to turn around 180 degrees with a near instantaneous hop to reverse the position of its head and arse).
The sight of an animal that big moving that quickly is a reality readjustment. I have no desire to tangle with either animal FWIW. An African Buffalo is probably more dangerous on average in the wild because they tend to be more aggressive. But if they fought my money is on the Bison.

He also breeds what is called a Beefalo. Cow and Buffalo mix and I must say it is some good meat. Doesn't have all the fat and grease of regular beef.
Bit of trivia: Charles Goodnight, the guy who the character of Woodrow Call was partly based on, was one of the first guys to breed a cattle/buffalo mix. He called them Cattalo though.
Beefalo

There is a drive through Safari Park in Delhi, La that has a bison. He is huge. He tried to stick his head in the window of our car for some feed. His eye is as big as your fist.
