Yeah because working for a company that cuts you loose early to enjoy time with your family means that you're a responsibility shirking puss. fricking idiot.

It’s not about shirking responsibility.

On my team, the understanding is that when there are “light” days to be had, you take them. Those days are typically before the major holidays. We have that understanding becuase we know that there are times when we’ll need to step up and work nights and weekends occasionally.

There are roughly 200ish work days in a calendar year. There are 6 or so major holidays. You can afford to make the day before those “light” days. A good leader understands this.

I called a meeting for all of my direct reports. Yes I am that guy. It is for a new major customer order so it's legit. Anyone else doing actual work today?
Always a good way to get team morale to an all time high!

You gotta clarify.

Is a new order for a major customer

or an order from a new major customer.

I don't know how to decipher the new major customer order verbage.

Your direct reports want you to know that you should be more clear and they would not need Thanksgiving Eve meetings.

I'm not talking about a company that let's you off. I'm talking about the expectation that you should get off. The belief that you are owed the afternoon off.

If that’s the expectation that has been set, then yeah, it should be expected.

And given the fact that the OP clearly needed validation for his decision to schedule a late afternoon meeting today, one can only assume that this is something that normally wouldn’t happen where he works.

I know what you mean. I get it. I just feel sorry for you that you never worked for a company where the culture was already instilled in place for you to have a light day today, if at work at all. Expectations or not.

But for those of us who actually work for companies where this is the culture and people are treated like people and not robots, don't sit here and reply to us like we're being ridiculous for criticizing the topic of the OP. It's YOU who works for a company that expects to drain every penny out of you, holiday, day before holiday, etc. Not THE REST OF US. You don't know better.

I'm being sincere in saying that I hope one day your situation changes. Mine did, and I realized the fricking retards I worked for in the past and how ridiculous they were being, and how much better my situation is now. Not nearly the turnover either. And people actually retire from this company. Go figure, huh?

My guess is you're already that guy that everyone at the office already talks bad about.

And no matter how many Thanksgiving meetings he calls, the boss has a kid or nephew that the OP will answer to soon enough

If you gotta do it, explain it and then give them all a bonus for helping out. You will get the bonus money back tenfold

Yes. We're off work tomorrow and Friday, not today, tomorrow, and Friday.

Working until 2. Was pretty busy this morning because half the staff is out on vacation, but things have slowed down now.

I wouldn't feel too bad about calling a meeting if everyone is already at the office, just make it as short as possible and buy them lunch next week.

I would be happier if you told me I have to be in a meeting in 2 minutes. Fire yourself.

As one boss to another - frick you. Everyone's off today & tomorrow except me (perks of running the biz right?). It's called being a good employer, dick.

This isn't accurate. I'm a professional who gets job offers from recruiters every week. I like who I work for/with. That's why I stay. They are easy going, generous with time off and pay well. They simply can't let people off suddenly on a day like today and I don't expect it.

Yep. It’s Wed. Middle of the week. Work day. I’ll take a day off tomorrow and be back at it Friday.
