Just got done replacing my fence. It was 58 panels for the whole thing. One neighbor didn't pay anything. He got the ugly side. Backyard neighbor got stiffed by 2 of the 3 neighbors so his comment to me was if I halfed it with him he would let me have the pretty side. I didn't argue. I would have paid half either way but it looks better without the rails facing my side. Third neighbor paid half also and he let me have the pretty side. We went with 4 rails instead of three. Didn't want to make it too difficult on fence hoppers.

If you paid for it you get to decide. If they pitched in then maybe turn it the other way.

You are absolutely a prick, but it has nothing to do with your fence issues.

replaced mine a couple of years ago, was going to do it no matter what, next door neighbor offered(before I got to his side,) to split my half and pay me if I'd replace the rest of his(he asked the guy behind both of us if he'd chip in, he was a dick and got the ugly side,) I think he thought I was using a contractor, as I was doing his, his neighbor asked if I'd do theirs, that went on until I'd replaced almost every fence on the block, I ended up hiring two guys and taught them how to build the fence that I was putting up and just bought material and supervised, no one even asked how much before I started, they just paid what I asked, made a small bundle

Sweet. Neighbors have asked me to handle contracting for their fence after seeing mine (in the pics above) and I have declined. I'll bust my arse for myself, but not others.

Not a smart thing to do. Always put the finished side facing out. The way you built your fence, gives a thief a built in ladder to clime over your fence.

You've made it easier for culcha to hop your fence though.
Sounds like half the board has a problem i've never had, neighbors jumping the fence and getting into their yards.

It's almost like fences don't have gates that open and close to walk through intsead of hopping the "ugly side" of the fence.

Too many people living in fear of fence hoppers. Probably got a front or back door that someone can easily get in anyways

This but I'm not sure this is necessary when the outer side is in a neighbor's yard, no?

If there is no neighbor behind your or even to the side, then this matters. Otherwise, I don't see how it does.

Ask any cop about this theory. Do you think the fence hoppers come from your own neighborhood? No. They leave their own shitty neighborhood and go where the good stuff is.
And then when they see they can't hop your fence, they walk around to the gate, open it and get into your backyard. Tada!

these baws don't seem to realize you can build a fence that looks exactly the same on both sides

It's not about "pretty". It's inside vs. outside. Building the fence with the inside toward you is bad for many reasons. In no particular order, it leads to fence inconsistencies throughout the neighborhood and just generally looks shitty. You'll have the outside facing the street on that part, then the inside facing you on the side. Looks like crap. It also makes the fence appear to belong to your neighbor when it's actually your fence. Most of all, you lose the ability to stand on the cross beams and look over at your neighbor's yard.

How does this matter if it borders a neighbor? If he swapped it, it would literally be the same exact issue? What are you guys missing here to not realize that?

See above, it's not facing a street.

This is fair.
