I'm sure most of you have heard this, where did the saying come from?

I've heard it several times over the years but I think the first time I heard it was on G.I. Joe back in the 80s

Remember those Scary Story collections we read as kids that had the creepy as drawings? The 'viper' story was in them for levity.
