I work offshore. I fly in a S-76 all the time. But there is no flying when its foggy. In fact today flight have been delayed all morning because of fog. And there are no mountains out here to run into. It makes no sense that they were flying in those conditions.

I don't think there is a question about the helicopter flying into terrain.
The question is, why?
Was it CFIT? Was it uncontrolled? Was there an onboard fire? Was the pilot incapacitated? He wouldn't be the first guy to have a massive heart attack at the controls.

ATC said ceiling was 1100 feet. Helicopter was at 1500 feet. You can't fly VFR in the clouds.

Kobe used a chopper to play a trick on Pelinka, the LA Times reported in 2017. Bryant had the pilot do military maneuvers on the chopper with Pelinka on board, and even turn the engine off in midair. “My life was flashing before my eyes,” Pelinka told the newspaper. “I almost had a heart attack. Kobe’s just sitting there calm and collected.”

The pilot was fully qualified and rated to fly in the conditions they were in.
"It's foggy. You can't fly in fog."
Flying VFR and then taking your helicopter into fog is illegal. It is against the law.

The pilot was instrument rated.
Not filing an IFR flight plan does not render the instruments inoperable.
I wonder if this aircraft was equipped with TAWS?

It wasn't.

It was a controlled flight into terrain, it’s very common in flying accidents.

Thanks for clarifying. I read that and was wondering.

The instruments will still work.
You're saying if you don't file a flight plan your instruments don't work?
If you are VFR and hit unexpected weather or fog, do you not immediately use your instruments?
"Oh damn...I didn't file a flight plan. I can't use my instruments."
I have seen this statement several times. "He was flying VFR."
No, he filed a VFR flight plan. Doesn't change the fact he was an instrument rated pilot that would have made full use of his training when he hit IFR conditions.

thought you said they wouldn't?

No. These guys keep saying he was VFR. That can change with any change in conditions.

Why not blame air traffic control. Can they ground all planes and helicopters in heavy fog? Or can people just go fly around private in terrible condotions?

Personally I am going with that the pilot was taking a short cut, going by visual and the fog screws him up , he droos under the fog and he is dtaring at a mountain side with no time left to adjust

This has been around for a long time but even today it still serves as a reminder to those who fly it or maintain it.

Well he was operating under SVFR, but you can in some cases transition from VFR to IFR in flight. He requested a flight following but was not getting picked up. He was an instrument/commercial rated pilot.

However, I read that another pilot for celebs stated that there was always some sort of pressure to get to where they wanted to go.
If they are using a helicopter as a day to day vehicle I can easily see this happening. You get comfortable.
Helicopters almost deny physics and are therefore dangerous. They are specialized vehicles, usually used when other options aren't available or costs savings are significant. I guess it is cool and baller to fly around in one everyday but there is a high risk.
