Yeah, y'all are making me feel better about my current situation. Even though I just spent $500 on freon because I was low about 2 weeks ago. $95 a lb. They said I had a leak on one of my coils but hopefully the charge holds for a while.

While modern building has helped in regards to insulation, windows, and such, two things we do now make cooling homes more difficult. We have stopped building porches on most new homes. Western (and eastern to a lesser extent) facing porches that cover windows help keep the sun out. On top of that, we cut down every tree of any real size within a quarter mile of a subdivision/neighborhood all so we can sell more lots. We've taken all the shade away, natural or otherwise.

And thinking about it, the open floor plan that looks so nice doesn't help matters, either. We can't close off rooms as easily now. We're stuck trying to cool a bigger space with no good way of closing off rooms.

Ok here goes; I battered your Wife and Mother in the same session. They looked like a glazed donut after they finished me off

It is worth the effort/hassle. If you don't want the hassle, it isn't hard to install a drain and avoid having to dump it.

Another way to keep your temperatures more under control is to not run clothes dryers and dishwashers until late at night or earlier in the morning when it's cooler. Also cooking as you know can you really jack the temps up but not sure how to overcome that.

That’s why my house cool easily. West side has a mother in law apt with seperate HVAC and east side a large screened in porch and the windows are all shaded by privacy trees and I have a lot of big oaks and magnolia trees. My yard is so shady near the house it’s hard to grow grass

I’m just gonna put a window unit in every room instead of paying 28k

My first house was 1100 SQ ft and didn't have central ac. Two window units in the bedrooms and a portable unit in the living area. Kind of sucked during the winter though.

They can't say the prices have risen that much right? I know prices are rising all over but that's a giant leap from just 5 years ago.

Goddamn baw you living in a Walmart?

So, how much would you charge if having to work in 130+ degree attics to change out an A/C and hook up all the duct work back to the plenums?????

I changed my system out 4 years ago now and did it in the early spring when my attic was a balmy 80 degrees. A 4 ton unit inside and condenser unit outside ran me $6,800 and finished in one long day.

When the suns out, our house doesn’t get below 74. Doesn’t matter what the a/c is set to. It’s been fricking brutal outside.

I have seen quite a few similar posts in this thread: have you guys thought about doing a deep dive on the insulation side of your equation?

Insulation matters…a lot.

Had our HVAC replaced about 4 months ago. Getting ready to see just how well this bad boy works with triple digit heat indexes moving in.

We keep the house around 68 during the day and it’s handled it’s business so far.
