When people say pit bull they use it incorrectly to describe 4 or 5 different breeds. The APBT is one of those.

Wife is understandably freaking out because we have 2 kids.
Not sure what to do here
So if you keep the mutt and not listen to your concerned wife.....and God forbids the worst thing happens...you'll be second guessing yourself the rest of your life.

There are probably closer to 20 breeds that are commonly misidentified as pitbulls.
When you say pitbull, referring to the APBT, you are not wrong. It's short for their full breed name. That's where you were wrong.

Looks much more boxer/lab to me...

Looks nothing like a pit. Is your vet retarded? Looks like a boxer mutt like mine. DNA test showed 0% Pit on her.

I think what caused her to say that was the eyes. google image search red pitbull puppies and those greenish/blue eyes are just like my pup's. been googling this and i don't think she's off base for saying he might have some PB in him at all. I take him on walks and i've had three or four people ask if he's a pitbull - i of course say 'hell no he's just a boxador puppy'.
We have a DNA test on the way and i'll update after we get the results. I'm thinking it is a lab/pit mix and the shelter called it a boxer so he wouldn't go unadopted.

It honestly shouldn't matter to you whatsoever OP. You went to adopt a mutt and that's exactly what you did. Your family will love that mutt and he'll love y'all.

Nah dude if it's 1% pit then it's a murder dog.

My sister adopted a Pit/Catahoula Curr mix. He is the sweetest dog, Playful and loving. To my knowledge she’s never had an issue with him, other than the usual puppy training stuff.

Personally, I'd like to know the percentage of pitbull owners in the US, and the percentage of pitbull mixes in the US.
Only then can you accurately look at the dog biting statistics and see how dangerous the breed may be.
Unfortunately, it's impossible to know what percentage of owners in the US have a pitbull.
But, in my experience, it seems to me that the breed is very common.

Great looking pup. Raise it right and it will be a wonderful family dog.

Said i'd update the thread.
DNA test came back the the pup was AmStaff and Bull Terrier mix (i don't have it in front of me so the second one might be wrong). Bottom line it doesn't get any more pit bull than this puppy. no boxer. no lab.
Problem sort of solved itself as the daughter ended up being allergic to the dog anyways. never showed any sign of allergies before but broke out in hives whenever he licked her. could we have powered through the allergy with medications and whatnot if it were a cocker spaniel? maybe.
We did find him a good home and were 100% up front with the people who took him in re: pitbull. its a husband/wife whose kids are headed off to college. they have one dog but wanted another that would be more the wife's dog. they already had some training sessions lined up. i made sure they didn't have any neck tattoos so i think he'll be in good shape.
He was a super smart puppy so I'm glad he ended up in a good home.

You did your due diligence. He was a good looking pup, but it's probably for the best. I wouldn't want to worry about this for 10-15 years either.

Those kids will never see their parents alive again.
Congrats
Should have shot it and thrown it in a ditch on a back road.

If you already have the puppy and sense he/she has an agreeable temperament then what’s the problem?
I once met a guy from Boston who was an asshat, I don’t hate all Bostonians because of him.
Do a test: next time the puppy is eating or fiercely playing with a toy, go take the food or toy away and see how it reacts. If the dog gets aggressive, you have issues. If not, I don’t see the problem.
I get that pit bulls have a reputation but I’ve also met a bunch of really sweet pits. I don’t think you should ditch the dog just because of crimes it didn’t commit.
Also if the puppy loves you kids, it will protect the frick out of them.
Edit: I see the update, and you handled the situation like a champ!
