When I read that there was a crack, I thought a beam would have a partial fracture...not a clean and complete break like that.

Could this have been old damage from a past tornado impact or strong river current?

I know the bridge was hit by a small tornado in 2015 when I lived there, but I'm sure it's been inspected dozens of times since then. They don't really have the tall tanker or container ship traffic in Memphis like they do in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, so I doubt it was hit that high up by a barge.

Maybe another part failed elsewhere and caused too much stress on that one piece. Looking forward to seeing the report on this one. Hernando de Soto bridge has been open for almost 50 years now. If the materials were shite, they'd have probably known about it by now.

Old 55 Bridge

I remember going over this in the mid 60s (was born in '60) going to stockcar races at Riverside. Can't believe this bridge is still there.

There is a ton of traffic over both of those bridges every day, especially during rush hour. With all of the logistics in Memphis, this will be noticed

Yeah, I-40 between Memphis and Little Rock is the worst stretch of interstate in the United States. Save for boring routes, I can’t think of a close second. Massively crowded and a living hell.

All River traffic has been halted until this situation is resolved as well.

Well, grain and corn prices are going up.

And I think this is going to take a long time to fix given how severe it is. They will probably reopen river traffic before they reopen that bridge.

I-10 between Houston and El Paso would like a word with you.....so would I-5 between LA & San Diego

I-55 southbound goes down to one lane after the bridge at a hard right turn. Since that's the only route now, traffic is going to absolutely suck around there. It's 35 mph under the best of circumstances with all of those trucks.

I've lived in Memphis and in Baton Rouge, and I swear that the I-10 stretch through Baton Rouge towards Houston is worse than the I-40 stretch between Memphis and Little Rock. But they both absolutely suck, they both need more lane capacity, and are both major truck routes with a lot of accidents and congestion.

I think both metro areas desperately need another bridge. Baton Rouge needs one in the Plaquemine area and Memphis probably needs one crossing the river somewhere between Southaven and Tunica around Horseshoe Lake. Both need it for the same reasons too: a pressure relief value during high traffic situations and for system redundancy in cases just like this, where one bridge is out for an accident, ice, or maintenance.

Holy shite lol.

99% that crack didn't suddenly appear. I wonder if it was mentioned during previous inspections and neglected.

That’s awful for a much different reason: long and boring.

No, I-40 is worse. So many fricking 18 wheelers taking up traffic and slowing you down. Trust me, do that route all the time, and it’s no where near as bad so long as it isn’t rush hour.

No way they inspected that bridge and let that one slide in the past.

A break with horizontal AND vertical offsets.

The TDOT map says "at the Tennessee-Arkansas line", so which state grabs responsibility. OTOH, two states pushing for federal funds make more noise.

The repairs and maintenance of the bridge is handled by TDOT, with the funding split between Arkansas and Tennessee. And both states work share the cost to fix the bridge.

Can't tell with the scale of the photos, but it looks like it's moved at least an inch or two upward and to the side.

They are likely combing through the rest of that bridge for other structural problems. And I'd bet they find some, which will prolong the closure and repair timetable.

So the big question is, is the crack the problem or just the symptom of a bigger problem? Either way as a former truck driver, I feel bad for all the folks that will be dealing with this traffic nightmare.

Yeah. I'm not a structural engineer, but that crack looks massive. At this point I'd guess that they are in for a long repair or an emergency rebuild for some parts of it if they find other problems.

Which is shocking because I thought this was something minor and precautionary until I saw the pictures. Like the kind of damage and inspection that would happen if a barge bumped into it.

Damn glad they caught it when they did!

Didn't Memphis and Arkansas have some minor earthquakes a while back?
