Once again, slides have closed that highway. The diversion routes take a whole lot longer so if you know anyone taking that road, let them know so they can adjust travel plans and routes.

I’ve had to take the detour because of slides when I lived in Charlotte going to Tennessee. That hot springs area around Tennessee is where I should have stopped.

Landslides are trashy.

I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills, until the landslide brought me down.

I've driven on I-40 once. That could have been me.

We had a fatality due to a slide up near Rogersville last night. Guy was in his car and got swept off the road.
Whole chunks of road missing, looks like the aftermath of a quake.

I’ve seen better landslides in the Quad.

My hand was tingling the day after driving that stretch over 2 years ago. Is that normal for someone who hasn’t driven through mountains before?

A few years ago it was closed at the TN / NC border for several months because a rock slide wiped out part of the road over the Pigeon River Gorge. Had to detour through Hot Springs NC, but the official detour was north from Asheville via I-26 all the way to I-81 near Bristol then south back to I-40.

There are landslides happening across TN because of the constant rain we have had these last 2 weeks. TVA cannot move water out fast enough because of Ohio River, it’s a big hydroelectric nightmare.

Two topics.
Actually not connected.

NCDOT is reporting that in order to safely cleanup the rock slide area, I-40 will need to remain closed for about one week. Then traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction for six to eight weeks through the Pigeon River Gorge near the state line. Detour: through Johonson City. LINK
Latest on closures for the interstate. Lots of state and secondary roads closed in East TN.
