I-10 to get warning system to alert drivers of traffic leading to Baton Rouge

Hope they invest in a lot of bulb replacements for these things....because they'll be on almost 24/7.

A new warning system project on Interstate 10 could ease traffic frustrations and improve safety, the state Department of Transportation and Development said.
DOTD received an $8 million bid for the Queue Warning System project on I-10 between Grosse Tete and the I-10/I-110 split.
The system will "warn motorists of queues ahead on I-10 from LA 77 to LA 1 in the West Baton Rouge area, and improve safety on this stretch of I-10,” said DOTD communications director Rodney Mallet.
The system tracks vehicles and their speed as they pass. If it detects that cars are stopped or moving slowly, it activates the warning system and a message with flashing lights is displayed. The warning will tell drivers to be ready for a slowdown or stop ahead, which helps avoid unexpected braking. Once the line is gone, the system deactivates. It can also help with congestion by creating more uniform speed.

A 2015 Federal Highway Administration study in Texas found that a queue warning system reduced crash potential by 18 to 45 percent.
In addition, use of the system over 200 nighttime lane closures was estimated to have saved between $1.4 million and $1.8 million in societal costs associated with crashes.
The $7,967,020.41 bid was accepted this month and a pre-construction meeting with the contractors is expected to take place within the next 30 days.

They could save a fortune by making this meme into a permanent sign.

They don't use any of the signs they have in place now, how will this be any different?

Doesn't Google Maps do this for free?

I guess they are concerned that the locals don't check the traffic, and they want to encourage them to get off I-10 and use one of the many pretend alternate routes available.
Might be helpful when they start work on the widening project next year if flying cars become common by then.

That is not gonna change anything.
Why is it impossible to get any sort of bypass, loop, additional interstate, another bridge?
Another study is added or stupid shite like this gets put into play. A LED sign is not gonna help things

Airline Highway has a bridge. But even under normal circumstances, that road is so inefficient that it still makes more sense to sit in traffic on I-10.

Man, I'm glad I'm out of that shithole.

Should have one to warn motorists when people are being shot at on I-10

Most of the long haul trucks use Waze now. If it was quicker to take Airline Highway with all of its traffic lights and rail crossings...they'd already be taking it.

Meh, it’s better than nothing at all. A lot of the wrecks on that stretch are caused by people running 70-80 MPH up on slower/stopped traffic. If this gives them some sort of warning that some fricking idiot inexplicably decelerated, maybe it will help. Not sure if the cost is justified tho.
Won’t solve the congestion and traffic back ups either.

I hope the put it just past an exit sign, where it alerts you to your fate, but too late to allow you to do anything about it.

To be effective that sign should be placed on I-12 west just as you leave Hammond, La.

Airline is a complete cluster frick on the east side
Of that bridge. Unless you eliminated every traffic signal it’s useless to consider that a viable alternative.

Yeah, put it just past the Grosse Tete exit so there’s absolutely nothing you can do to avoid the traffic.

The only alternative route is I-20, so put the sign in Waco, TX if going east, or Hattiesburg, MS if going west. They are the only people with a choice.
