What if you already make 200k?

Well of course there’s a million “x” factors like that you could throw in. A person making $200k a year who won the $200 million Lottery the year before would do just fine in New Orleans too.

But for the sake of argument I’m just sticking with the OPs perameters.

No, you don’t live in New Orleans if you live in Metairie or Kenner. You just don’t

Just like you don’t live in Baton Rouge if you live in LP or AP.

You have no idea how high propery taxes and insurance cost in New Orleans. Throw in a mortgage, private school tution for 3 kids and youre almost losing money

Side note TB08: if you’re drinking, pour one out for AF08’s parents house. The movers are taking stuff away this week.

The average Catholic grammar school is about 7k plus fees in the New Orleans area (your typical feeder school into somewhere like Jesuit). Now if you are talking about Newman, Country Day, Sacred Heart etc then it is a whole different ballgame. The people sending their kids to these schools typically are making much more than 200k.

You're right a family that is in the 98th percentile of earners nationally can't live in a city that comes in at 2% lower than the national average on the cost of living index. I swear some of you are so damn dumb. I'm giving you objective data and you say it's wrong.

This family would make more money that 97% of people on the country in an area that is below average in "expensiveness."

Christian Bros and Stuart Hall are both feeder schools into Jesuit.

CBS $10k
Stuart Hall $14k

That cost of living index factors in all of New Orleans. The average is driven down because of the amount of poverty in the city. OP ain’t living in NOLA East or other hood like places. A decent area in NOLA is expensive.

You can’t look at the averages for New Orleans. It is too Balkanized. Vast swaths of the city earn less than $20k/year. You have to look at home prices in halfway decent neighborhoods, property taxes, insurance rates, school prices, etc.

A large swath of people who live in New Orleans live in poverty. There is a huge discrepancy between the cost to live in the ghetto and send your kids to public school and the cost to live in a desirable part of the city and send your kids to private school. A stat like cost of living, average home price, or median income is pretty irrelevant in a city like New Orleans.

16% less than Miami
4% less than Dallas
133% less than NYC
26% less than Chicago
Similar to Austin, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City

Cliffs?

I can't read 6 pages of people who hate a state they live in arguing for living in it.

Are you though? Are the families referred to consisting of 5 children? In a city where the public education is so poor that anyone who can even kind of afford it and cares about their kids sends them to private school?

Your general numbers are fun and all, but it doesn’t even come close to painting a full picture.

The question posed in the OP was where WOULD you live out of 4 options. I said not New Orleans because while one CAN live in New Orleans for that, it would be a much poorer quality of life than I’d want for my hypothetical family.

You’re looking at data that is terribly skewed and doesn’t represent the OP.

Try living in Miami, Dallas, NYC (el oh fricking el), Atlanta, or Chicago with 3 kids for $200k. Seriously, if you want to talk objective data, I’d love to see one listing in NYC for a family of 5 that someone making $200k a year could afford.

Austin and Salt Lake City have good public schools, but I’d still venture to say it’d be a stretch.

That's fine. I don't take issue with that. I take issue with you disagreeing in all of your following posts that 200k is not enough to live there.

while one CAN live in New Orleans for that,

You've been disagreeing with that the entire thread
