New Orleans police on Tuesday jailed a former Lakeview charter school teacher after he was accused of kissing an eighth-grade girl in his classroom on multiple occasions. Matthew Nesser, 34, who until recently was a social studies teacher at Edward Hynes Charter School in the 900 block of Harrison Avenue, was booked on one count of indecent behavior with a juvenile.

ut two days later, a woman went to Orleans Civil District Court and obtained papers ordering Nesser to stay away from her 14-year-old daughter and her younger sister. The woman asserted in court documents that Nesser had kissed her older daughter, a Hynes student, on the lips at least five times this year alone. The most recent had been the week of April 9, after Nesser had arranged to meet alone with the girl, the court records said. The papers also accused Nesser of sending unwanted gifts and inappropriate, electronic messages to the girl. And the documents alleged that Nesser had been giving unwanted attention to the girl since last year, portraying the behavior as a possible attempt to groom her for sexual abuse. The woman claimed in the documents that she “recently learned” Nesser had “exhibited the same behavior toward another eighth-grader last year.” It is not clear if that allegation had ever previously been formally investigated or reported.
