The current system was installed so poorly that it all needs to be redone. Mold/mildew everywhere, registers are rusty due to condensation, etc. I want this done right and don't mind paying a premium, but I don't want to get ripped off either.
This is in a typical northshore house about 16 years old.
What about brands? Is Amana expensive? It seems like there is no clear "best" brand out there?

how many sqft is the house?? single floor?

2200 sq. ft. of conditioned space, single story, Mostly 9' ceilings with about 800 sq. ft. of 12'.

I am strongly considering a quote I have for a complete new system and ductwork on a 1600sqft home for ~$12K.
So yours sounds in line.
The company I'm considering is top-notch installation.
I went under the house (crawlspace) with the guy and he showed me where my current ductwork (20yrs old) is leaking

He doesn't have a 1.5 ton... he is undersized by 1.5.

I am not sure where Amana rates in terms of pricing. I use consumer reports a lot and in their brand reliability survey last year Amana had the worst failure rate for conventional AC units at 30%(best was 20%) and the 4th worst in Heat Pumps at 43% (Worst was 50% best was 31%)
The best brand reliability in both categories was American Standard. Failure rate results listed below.

In all things, get multiple quotes.
A couple of the guys I work with have recently installed Goodman's. They haven't had issues and got them installed for less than half of any other unit so felt it was worth the risk because there is a pretty good warranty and the cost was so much less they could affors to replace it in 5 years and still come out ahead.

New Construction: 3 ton + 4 ton dual stage 16 Seer Units (Comfortmaker by Carrier), hard duct throughout, two smart thermostats, and two gas furnaces. Total was approximately $20k.

How big is your home ?
We did our 1300 sq ft camp for 8K
Later we found the outside unit has the serial number scratched off so it may be "hot" though.
