My house is sitting at 80F even thought I have thermostat set to 71. I called a guy out here a while back and he changed the capacitor but it didn't help.

One thing I noticed is the fan on the outside unit doesn't run very often, so the air coming out of the vents is lukewarm and runs all day. Even running nonstop all day, the house sits at 80F.

Is this normal? Should I just tolerate 80F? The HVAC guy says I am overreacting and it's just hot outside. blah blah.

your a/c guy doesnt have a clue what he is doing

from your description alone i can tell its one of 2 things, its low on freon, or the outdoor units fan motor is bad and needs to be replaced

Regardless, it isn’t working correctly. No reason for your house to be 80 degrees.

What I don't get is the fan outside doesn't run but about 25% of the time. Is this normal? Is it supposed to cut-off even when the AC is on?

Mine went out a couple of weeks ago.
They said it was low on Freon. So they added 3 1/2 lbs.
fast forward to last weekend and it went out again. They had to change some kind of line that was blocked up. It’s working perfectly fine know.

Long story short, more than likely it’s low of Freon or a line is blocked.

The fan outside should be running if it is hotter in the house than the thermostat is set, looking and see if you have ice build up around the compressor...if so, low on freon

Your hvac guys sucks

For a typical house your AC should have no problem keeping it 20 degrees colder than outside temp

Now if its 95 outside it will struggle keeping it at 70

True, but if you live in a small house with bad insulation it may not keep it 20 below

That’s absurd and it sounds like your HVAC guy is worthless. If the house is hotter than the set point, and the outside unit isn’t running, something’s wrong.

It could be a bunch of different things… clogged evaporator drain (float switch tripping compressor), low freon, frozen coil, etc.

Hire a competent HVAC guy and explain that the outside unit isn’t always running even when it’s 80 degrees inside. Is the current HVAC guy the one who installed the system? If so, I’d be a little worried based on his reaction to your issue.

Does your AC catch up at night?

I keep mine at 65, The past several days the temp begins increasing around 3pm. Last night around 7p, the temp was 73, and didn’t drop back down completely until sometime around midnight.

If something similar is happening to you, then it’s not your ac, it’s this blistering arse heat.

No. At least not if you have the “fan” set to “auto” on the thermostat. If you have it set to “on” instead of “auto” then your fan (the blower inside, not the condenser fan outside) will keep running even after the compressor shuts off. But the outside unit should still kick on if it’s hotter than whatever your thermostat is set to.

If your outside unit is only running 25% of the time and it’s 80 degrees inside your house, there is 100% a problem.
