Actually that isn't always the case, and that kind of thinking caused many death during Katrina.

It is well documented that Katrina's storm surge surpassed that of Camille even though Katrian upon landfall was "only" a Cat 3 hurricane and weakening.

Camille a Cat 5 hurricane upon landfall had a slightly lower storm surge, but more important a much smaller sized (in area) storm surge; consequently, folks in Biloxi who felt they were safe were really in much greater danger.

The storm categories and the storm surge do not equate. Katrina was a huge storm that covered a far greater area than Camille and consequently had a much greater storm surge overall.

Local forecasts predict local storm surges. Ignore the wind intensity and pay attention to the local warnings. Just because a Cat 4 didn't harm you a Cat 3 landing close to where the Cat 4 did could.

Those pictures make no sense. Baton Rouge is not going to be 9 feet under water. New Orleans took a direct hit and only parts of that city went under water. Baton Rouge is much further inland. It would take a mega-storm that you would only see on some horrible Sci-Fi movie for that to happen.

That looks like the SLOSH model, which is every possible landfall scenario superimposed on one map. It's a quick way to see if a particular area is at risk from a hypothetical scenario. That said, Katrina caused the Mississippi to run backward for a short while, raising the level of the river by several feet. If that occurred while the river was already at flood stage-very unlikely in late summer and early fall, but it could conceivably happen in some highly unusual situation-the levee could possibly overtop.

Oh so the modelers put in every variable to make Baton Rouge flood. I would like to see this model's projection of nola. I would guess it would over top the new flood barriers and inundate nola again too. But they don't show you that cause it is a 1 and 10,000-10,000,000 year storm.

Everyone is complaining right now about LSU's budget cuts, but the looming threat that the campus is actually ultimately facing is storm surge from a major hurricane...a direct strike would turn the "Death Valley" section of campus into part of the Gulf of Mexico, right up to it where it meets with "Victory Hill." It's "not a matter of 'if' but 'when' " as they say, so ninety days out is a good pre-warning preparation time to gradually start restocking items while making your regular supermarket visits.

You sir are a fricking idiot.

If it's an El Niño year, then I'm not worried at all. El Niño cranks up the upper level winds in the Atlantic shearing the tops off the Hurricanes . Worst hurricane that will make land fall will be a cat 1 , maybe a weak 2; but that's it.

I seriously doubt Baton Rouge will see any storm surge from a Cat 3 storm. Your map is beyond bullshite....and that's from someone who's been through Cat 3 storms in south Louisiana.
