Sometimes the outer rain bands near the eye wall will basically connect and form a ring outside the inner eye wall. That can start an eye wall replacement cycle where the outer ring chokes off the flow of moisture to the inner eye wall and eventually replaces it. Sometimes they just merge. It is a complicated process that isn't really understood well and is unpredictable. It usually inhibits strengthening while it is happening, but often expands the wind field during the process. After it is complete the hurricane will often restrengthen, but nothing is guaranteed.
ETA - You can see the integrity of the inner circle start to deteriorate while the outer one takes over here:

She strengthened after every other EWR so far, hasn't she? Guess we will see how much Cuba messed her up.

That's what I thought but had never heard the term secondary eyewall before

How quick is a 360 degree rotation of the storm right now? Always wondered how quick a hurricane spins so to speak.
On another note, just read Birmingham, AL will have 30-50 MPH sustained winds on Tuesday with gust up to 50-70 MPH. Holy shite.

I'd just like to point out that this thread has gone to utter and complete shite. It started with a handful of weather afficionados / mets giving their educated opinions, and has increasingly degraded into a shite-show of wild-arse predictions, name calling, ban betting bullshite. Ya'll grow the frick up and let the people who know what they're talking about make educational posts and stop making me read through 12 pages to get a single actual fricking update.

Not really. She's basically been going through continuous cycles since she went through Barbuda, and went through some before then too. She's maintained for the most part, but Cuba was what took her down a few notches.

They're in the storm now.
Current pass suggests winds at the surface are 113 kt in the NE eye wall. That's 130 mph, 10 mph more than the 10PM CDT update.

This will work out for the good, I'll sit back and watch.
