Hurricane Ida - were the wind reports across SELA greatly under measured?

I read through the Hurricane Ida thread last night while unable to sleep and had forgotten how many people were convinced (myself included) that the wind was way stronger than being reported. There were numerous reports of winds 30-60mph from Baton Rouge to Ascension to Livingston while residents in those areas (myself included) were all calling bullshite on it.

I have a Davis weather station installed in my back yard and those are typically regarded as some of the best on the market. I've always been a weather enthusiast so it was worth the $1,100 to me. About an hour before the worst winds hit here, my anemometer broke with a 78mph gust. I assume something hit it because one of the cups cracked pretty badly. After that, the wind only got stronger while it measured weaker winds. My 78mph gust was about an hour before the hardest gusts and if the gust that broke it was 78mph, there is no way on God's green earth that our highest gusts were not between 100mph and 110mph.

I've seen many others say something similar. Duke, rds, and others -- what are your thoughts on this? Is there any evidence to back up my estimate of 100mph+ gusts in the Ascension area? I'm far northeast Ascension, if that helps, where the western eye wall passed. When the NHC downgraded it to a 105mph hurricane, it was just to my east by about 10-15 miles so to me, those gusts aren't out of the realm of possibility at all.

well you keep not differentiating the difference between gusts and winds.

Of course gusts are higher than sustained winds, I know that. That's why my estimate of 100-110mph gusts where I am based on what I saw with the 78mph gust that broke my anemometer and the fact that the hurricane had sustained winds of around ~105mph when it was closest to me, in my opinion, is correct. It was weakening and falling apart then and the gusts usually go kinda haywire when that happens in a landfalling hurricane. I'm not an expert but that's my guess - 100-110mph gusts here. Just trying to pick the brain of those who know more and have more access to that info than I do.

For BR, where exactly are official readings from? Is the airport it? Huge difference between the airport, south to the 10/12 split to Highland Rd

Yep, at the airport. The airport obviously got much weaker winds but still, I saw plenty reports from across Ascension and Livingston showing 30-60mph reports as well. There's just no way those are accurate. No possible way.

I know in Livingston parish there are areas including my property where it looks like God played a game of pickup sticks with trees. So, I don’t know the wind speed, but all I can say is it was more than I have ever experienced in my 50 years of living in south Louisiana.

I'm not quite your age but I can say the same thing, definitely much stronger than anything I've ever seen in my nearly 40 years.

She was blasting >100mph up my street a few hours after landfall. Worst winds of any hurricane I’ve stayed for.

Georges in 1998 was bad for wind, and dropped the 13kv lines everywhere in the city, but Ida winds were worse.

They should’ve named it after my mother in law.

If anyone can tell me what the max sustained and max wind gusts were in Madisonville, I'd like to know.

Longest fricking night of my life.

I started a thread on this when the official report came out. This was in the report.

quote:

The National Hurricane Center has released their post-analysis report on Hurricane Ida. Hurricane Ida's landfall intensity was kept at Category 4 with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph

quote:

It should be noted that two ships moored at Port Fourchon reported instantaneous wind
gusts of 194 kt and 150 kt as Ida passed over. The details of these reports, including the elevation
and exposure of the instruments, are unavailable at this time, and thus they are not considered
in the landfall intensity determination or included in the data tables. This report will be updated if
detailed data from these ships becomes available

Future note for you and anyone else:

If you have quality measuring instruments you can report your readings directly to NHC and they will be considered/included in the official offseason report on the storm.

So, if you have what you believe is an accurate measurement, make a NHC report. You can do it on their website.

They can only go off what is reported to them when making their official report.

I may go do that, though it might be a bit late for it now.
