Thats the debate right now on 2k.

If her direction reverses to a more southerly course like the Euro model solutions seem to suggest and the eye remains over open water, wouldn't that give her a chance to strengthen slightly? I'm sure she's churned up much colder water to the surface so that somewhat defeats the benefit of the gulf stream..but would it decrease the water temp enough to just halt any strengthening?

23 Devastating flooding across much of the county. Travel is nearly impossible with numerous roads countywide impassable or washed out. Many homes across the county are inundated.

20 Widespread flooding over much of the county. Many roads flooded and impassable including Highways 41 and 50 and Interstate 40. Numerous homes and communities near the river are surrounded by water.

17 Numerous roads flooded. Water floods Highways 41 and 50, and parts of Interstate 40. Areas many miles from the river are flooded due to tributaries backing up.

16 Many secondary roads are flooded. Water affects Highways 41 and 50 and travel delays are likely. Areas many miles from the river are affected as small streams backup and flood. Muddy Creek, Cypress Creek, and Island Creek flood areas around Chinquapin. Significant flooding in the River Landing community in Wallace occurs as well.

15 Secondary roads adjacent to the river flood and may be impassable. Tributaries that drain into the river flood secondary roads. Water surrounds homes and properties in the River Landing community in Wallace.

13 Low land flooding adjacent to the river and its tributaries is expected. Tributaries of the Northeast Cape Fear River likely produce low land flooding.

Why the hell not? This storm has completely mocked the best professionals in the country, over the last 36-48 hours when it comes to intensity. So why not blow up 10-15 mph 100 miles offshore?

A pro met going with this statement on Twitter:

quote:
I am fearing that this might be the early stage of a rapid intensification process of #HurricaneFlorence. Another burst of convection to the north of the eye of the hurricane in recent frames. We'll see if this cyclonically wrapping eyewall completes its orbit around the eye

Nah.

The storm is bad enough. She'll do plenty of damage whether the winds pick up 10 mph or not. This guy is just trying to get followers, and the people that follow mets on Twitter love this kind of sensationalism.

Upwelling is part of the debate currently.

One side suggests this should happen and not allow her to intensify, while the other side (and the one I kinda lean toward) is the fact shes sitting over the Gulf Stream and hot water is moving in and out regardless so she does have an opportunity to slightly intensify, and technically she has.

This will become someones doctoral thesis about the thermodynamics of a huge tropical cyclone sitting over a constant flow heat source, versus the kinetic energy spent with a giant storm.

I guess we will find out soon enough what happens .

Her pressure has dropped and her wind speed increased (as slightly as it may be).

The question is how long does it last, and does her giant size upwell enough ocean outside the gulf stream to affect convection.

Making it a GE would be a perfect touch.
