I’ve been interested in weather for a long time, and I’ll say that this may be one of the strangest hurricanes I can recall. It can’t decide where it wants to go; conditions are favorable for it to strengthen, yet it weakened today; it’s going to sit once it makes landfall, it’s all just strange.

I think every time we have a storm like this, the smart guys learn from it. They readily admit they don't know much about predicting strength. For a couple of days now, they have said the steering currents would break down.

When storms get into the gulf, they get in and they hit. You don't have this days on end of waiting, which allows storms to change over time.

The weather channel should be ashamed of their coverage. People are trying to get helpful information and they just sensationalizing for the viewership

Storm will weaken to cat 1-2 before landfall

2 maybe but not 1. Levi’s video this evening explained it well. There is a small amount of shear from a low over Florida that may keep injecting a bit of dry air from the southwest, and the storms extremely large size and Hurricane force bands outside the eyewall is preventing enough inflow for further strengthening and complete closing of the eyewall. The wind field can continue to expand with tropical force winds 200 miles from the center.

Now by the time the eye makes landfall it could have weakened considerably due to slow movement. But it’s going to get close enough as a major hurricane that surge and wind will have already done the damage by that point so it won’t matter

I've always hated the weather channel's coverage before or after the storm. They have outstanding resources so they make up for it during the brunt of the storm.

looks like the Hurricane Hunter went to take a look at the spot of dry air that's causing all of the storm's problems

They cranked the flow up this week to try and get some water out of there ahead of time. It went from right around 1000 cfs to 14,000+ the last I checked yesterday.

Somewhere right now someone on Lake Murray is complaining about the power company dropping the water level.

Anecdotally, it feels pretty dry here in Florida for mid September.

Also Levi laid out 2 potential paths. If Florence takes the first option it will be disastrous. This is where she makes land in NC then stalls inland, drifts into SC, then turns NE and goes right back over NC

The other path is the stallout off the coast then drift SW. this keeps the storm a hurricane longer but most heavy rain offshore

It’s possible as the low over Florida is moving west so timing will determine this. If the low can move out before she gets too close to land she could strengthen a bit. But luckily she missed her prime opportunity to get real strong

It's like trying to get helpful information from CNN or Fox News - they're all for profit companies. You have to Wade through the bullshite or you can go straight to hurricanes.gov.
