I did recently see that it’s the largest majority white city in the “Deep South”, which surprised me.

The census indicates continued white flight.
Montgomery has dropped 7k. Pike road up 6k, millbrook up 2k, Prattville up 2k.
Mobile is down, Daphne and Fairhope up considerably.
Huntsville is growing relative to those as there isn't really "white flight" from Huntsville.

It is a bit misleading. Huntsville keeps expanding its city limits. Birmingham could easily hit 500-600k if it could shift its limits a few miles. There isn't shite around Huntsville, so they keep moving the lines.

I honestly don't even know where Huntsville is. I thought it was a town.

Metro area is the only thing that actually matters. City population is an arbitrary stat dependent on the land area of the city.
Birmingham metro 1,510,000
Huntsville metro 462,000
Jacksonville is Florida’s largest city because it’s the entire county. Miami’s metro is 4,500,000 people larger than Jacksonville’s.

My commute this past year after Cecil Ashburn got closed for like nine months disagrees with this.
