If I see a snake, I go the other way.

Actually, most folks are terrible at seeing snakes, at least in the woods

This.

I’ve been catching snakes since I was 5 or 6 years old, so I can spot a snake pretty damn well. But if I’m walking a nature trail and try to help people out, half of them can’t find the fricking snake when I’m pointing right at it and telling them where to look.

The evolutionary psychology aspect of this is fascinating. Jordan B. Peterson loves this topic.

I can't see a fallen tree or log in the woods without thinking snake. I've always been grateful for the freezing weather during hunting season as it drives those bastards underground.

... Which is exactly why I worry more about spiders than snakes.

I'm much more confident that I'm going to see a snake (and avoid it) than I am a spider. Chances are I'm not going to walk on a rattle snake. It's more likely I'll be in the garage, reaching in a box or shelf, and get bit by a brown recluse. They're smaller, silent, and will frick you up. I don't want some giant abscess. F spiders.

The copperhead is remarkably good about not giving a shite. they have such badass camo that they just don't move even when it's obvious they've been spotted. i've had to move several off of paths and even in the middle of streets, and they don't even slither away.

And as far as my detection of snakes generally, i am remarkably good at spotting serpentine shapes and/or patterns.

off-topic: i saw one of the most disgusting things in "nature" ever yesterday in my front yard--a giant roach carrying an earth worm in its mouth.

Snakes didn't have much to do with our superb eyesight. Unlike all the other shitting seeing animals, god made us in HIS image and gave us HIS ocular visions.

Thinking of all these OT badasses terrified of a 1 or 2 pound creature that is 9 times out of 10 completely harmless to them is funny to me.

We live in North America, not Australia. No snake here besides the EXTREMELY rare corral snake can kill you unless you decide to just not go to the doctor for a day after you get bit.

Doesn't work well for me, apparently!

I was on my phone setting up Pandora for a nice jog on the trail when I walked directly into a fricking snake.

When I felt it, I just thought it was something caught on my leg like a piece of rope and just shook my leg a bit without even looking down. It didn't fall off, so I looked down in absolutely fricking horror as I saw a snake around my leg. I shook it off violently and screamed like a girl!

Fear of snakes, yes!!! Nightmares involving snakes, yes. My fear is what would be considered morbid fear.

A Copperhead will bite and keep on chewing. Plus they're mean. There's none of this "they're just as scared of you as you are of them." They ain't scared of me.

Same here...and when I see a copperhead laying amongst the leaves in the fall, it just scares me shitless.

Yep. After I see one I might as well wrap it up for the day because every stick, root, twig, etc. is getting shot to shite because they look exactly like the biggest damn Copperhead known to man.
