Ophidiophobia (phobia of snakes) is one of the most common and intense phobias among the general population. Furthermore, a study reported that around 50% of the people experience dreams about snakes.

“As soon as the blow was struck, my resolution went for nothing, and I jumped a yard or two backwards with astonishing rapidity,”
Charles Darwin wrote.
Snake fear is a natural reaction.

The same was true when the researchers tested the volunteers’ peripheral vision: “Snakes were more efficiently detected than spiders and spiders were more efficiently detected than mushrooms,” the authors write.
And when they tried to distract the viewers with other images, they were able to direct attention away from the spiders, but not the snakes.

In all, snakes got the most attention and got it the fastest, the authors say. That’s consistent with the basics of Snake Detection Theory.
“Our data provide new perspectives on the potentially unique role of snakes as agents likely to have shaped central aspects of primate evolution, including what has been regarded a hallmark of African apes, our superb vision,” the authors write.

I will say that snakes keep your attention when one is around...at least until his head is separated from his body.

Can't say that I am convinced that snakes are the reason we evolved decent eyesight, though. I think that is a bit of a stretch.

Every step I take in the woods I look for a snake. Its death at the doorstep.

I'm trying to get better about killing them all. I just flung them into my neighbor's yard now.

Actually, most folks are terrible at seeing snakes, at least in the woods.

Same here...and when I see a copperhead laying amongst the leaves in the fall, it just scares me shitless.

They keep the rodent population down. Some people are so afraid of snakes they kill the helpful ones.

I've seen one venomous snake at our current house. I have a kid and a dog so it had to go. I leave the rest of them alone. I tell my wife that I killed it or at least tried to

I grew up in the country and saw them pretty often as a kid so they don't really bother me that much.

I fear copperheads the least among venomous snakes just because dry bites are fairly common and you can usually escape serious long term damage

But man do they creep me out the most

Idk. I know a snake can be a helluva motivator to move quickly.

A few years back I was walking with a pan of coolant to dump into our storage tank.

I saw something draw back, and my feet, with no input from the thinking portion of my brain, sent me jumping about 4-5 ft to my right.

It was a 4-5ft rattler which prompted the move.

In flip flops, wet leaves, and mud... No way I could replicate it without busting my arse

I just started cutting grass again. A lot of lots/work yards/ditches close to the inter coastal. I’ve never been more alert. With my current streak of luck I’m liable to get bit by some species that the local hospital doesn’t have anti venom for.

The science community blames everything on apes. There hasn't been an ape that evolved into a human in recorded history.

Recorded history say evil is rooted in a woman that was tempted by a serpent.

When was the last time you read about a snake taking half of someone's shite and biting them?
