Huge Pet Peeve: Subtitles for the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (SDH)

I’m 100% deaf in my left ear and hard of hearing in my right so I need to use closed captions. Nothing pisses me off more than watching a TV show or movie with terrible contrast on their CC...
Here’s an example of poor contrast...
This is how all captions should be...
Almost every movie / TV these days that has SDH has terrible contrast. How fricking hard is it to put a black background behind white lettering at the standard?!?

As someone in his 30s, not deaf, but everyone on TV mumbles, I agree.

All of my TVs have adjustable settings for that. Best setting i find is 20% opaque with background with 100% opaque black text.
ETA: most cable services and steaming services also offer their own CC setting adjustment as well

I don't have to use them, but I do for some shows.
What aggravates the piss out of me are the shows/movies that have absolutely terrible editing on the closed captions. The worst I have ever seen was Devil's Knot with Reese Witherspoon on Netflix, I think. Whoever put the CC together on that one certainly doesn't speak English as their first language.

CCs are farmed out to third-party companies—often the lowest bidder-to satisfy FCC regulations.

That is not a surprise. They are only slightly better than the automatically generated stuff. I like to turn the captions on on YouTube when I'm watching stuff like The Hydraulic Press Channel or other foreign English speaking channels. I always laugh.

My hearing loss is caused by 2000+ hours in an AH-64 / OH-58 and not giving a shot about hearing protection. Currently I can crank my A20’s up to the point I’m g2g. When I was still in the Army I had an H2 profile and a flight waiver.

Thanks I actually looked it up and you need to go on your PC. Play a movie and click CC. There’s a gear icon in the top right corner. There’s the customization settings in there. It syncs across all devices.
I guess I’ll just sign in to my D+ and Netflix account from now on when I’m visiting friends or family.

My home theater room upstairs has perfect acoustics and Klipsch speakers that I purchased many years ago before they became Best Buy quality. You can hear a pin drop in this sound system. The amp isn't a digital amp. It was Sony's flagship amp, STRDA777ES, at one time, and weighs about 45 lbs. The sub is a Meridian sub that'll go down to 16Hz. You can't hear it, but you damn sure feel the rumble.

Jet noise loss here. Almost guarantee you'll get a big improvement with the soundbar over regular TV speakers. Good luck.

I'm not sure what it is but my mother has something (like a bluetooth speaker)next to her chair that helps.
