Found out they are building a 72 unit HUD development at the end of my street. Zoning was done already and it passed. We saw the sign a long time ago and the property was so narrow we assumed it to be a pipeline as they are upgrading gas in our area.

Turns out it was an easement to a 4 acre track behind homes to a property this development would go on. Currently the city doesn't have sewer capacity for it and that will stop it for a while.

What recourse do we have beside trying to sell and move in what is a massively inflated post hurricane Laura market....

Can our federal and state reps shut this shite down?

One small hope is that the zoning be past one year and there were no triggers for extensions and thus will force another zoning vote. I'm waiting to hear back on the time frame.

Thanks

Actually, this is in my professional wheelhouse. HUD doesn't necessarily mean what you think it means.

There are a lot of HUD developments, especially new construction, that utilized HUD financing for construction of luxury, top-of-the market apartments.

Yes HUD does a lot of financing for less affordable properties, but I promise you'd be surprised by the amount of luxury apartments built using HUD $$$

Go to every meeting, call every elected official in your district. Explain how incredibly bad this could be for drainage and traffic. Demand mitigation studies. Make sure whatever is built there matches the surrounding neighborhood.

You might not prevent the development, but you might get it scaled back. But if it's already approved you are fricked.

This one specifically states for 60% or lower area medium income and people with mental and physical disabilities.

Developer abandons new housing project in Moss Bluff

Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) - Earlier this week, we told you about a housing development proposed on highway 378 in Moss Bluff.

It would have targeted families that earn less than about $40,000 a year, but due to opposition to the project, the housing will not go forward, according to the developer who does not want to fight the community.

The housing would have been 72 units off of Sam Houston Parkway. But after seeing what he called the “visceral, overwhelming and shocking responses of the community,” Harold Foley, of Atlanta, said they would abandon efforts to develop here.

Homeless advocate, Wayne Bebee, says the need for affordable housing is huge.

If true, you should push to have the zoning language changed to only allow the style of housing that is surrounding the property. So this doesn't happen again.

If they want to do higher density housing, it should be geared towards old folks/nursing homes. Those tend to be better neighbors.

Fair. That's LIHTC then.

If it's designated for disability though, I don't think your likelihood of problem tenants is as high as a typical low-income housing project. Not saying some people won't take advantage of that stipulation, but HUD and or LIHTC isn't necessarily something to worry over.

Oh frick. I know someone that had this type of place go up near them. I get that these guys need a place to stay, but it created a weird situation as they would hang out at the convenience stores and grocery stores, etc causing all kinds of issues.

If he's in westlake/moss bluff.....he's already surrounded by low income housing. There are trailer parks everywhere around there. That area explodes in growth, then slows to a crawl. It was always going to have some development issues like this. It's a price you pay for having big new employers nearby.

No but it's the same group.

That one never got zoned in moss bluff snd the person already said they were going to abandon that project. Moss bluff sticks together and would run that shite out. Once it hit the news they went apeshit over there.

This one is in Westlake. Neither my wife and I are from here and have since found out they don't stuck together here unless you are from here. If you were born outside of Westlake no one gives a shite.

We were looking to move way before this but Laura kinda blew up the housing Market.
