Baylor Medical hasn't been affiliated with Baylor in a couple of decades.

UT by default due to being located in Austin

I'm thinking:
Rice
UT
A&M
Trinity
Austin College
Southwestern
SMU
TCU
Baylor
St. Edwards
Academically, Rice is number 1 easily, they're #14 in the country.
According to USNews for national universities of the ones you listed.
Rice #14
UT #56
SMU #61
A&M #69
Baylor #75
TCU #78
ETA: These two are listed as National Liberal Arts Universities
Austin College #93
Southwestern #96
According to USNews for universities in the west of the ones you listed.
Trinity #1
St. Edwards #15

UT Dallas needs to be in the top 10.
And Baylor wouldn't rank above McLennan Community College.
UT Dallas is #145 in National Universities putting them behind Baylor who is #75 in National Universities.

But Texas State Teachers College is the only one to produce a POTUS.

Why SMU and TCU above UT?

Those rankings seem a little goofy to me just because everywhere I look it seems like St. Edwards is worse than Southwestern and Austin College

A lot of ya'll are letting your own personal sports allegiances and/or other biases influence your list. (Not that I expect anything different from an anonymous message board)
The latest rankings from the US News and world report are:
#15 Rice
#56 SMU
#56 UT Austin
#71 Baylor
#74 Texas A&M
#82 TCU
That is all of the Top 100 schools in the national universities category. Now having said that, what an individual student wants to study should be heavily weighted when choosing from that list.

Now that is some really interesting trivia. I didn't know where LBJ went to college. I would have never guessed that a president went to school in San Marcos.
Also it is interesting that UNT was previously named "North Texas State Teachers College"

That is the only official list I've ever seen with SMU > UT. I've seen UT 40 spots over SMU, even seen TCU and Baylor over SMU. It's kind of hard to get a good ranking I think. I definitely think SMU is better than TCU and Baylor though.

Where did you get that data from? Provide a link.
I got mine from US News and World Report's online listing of 2018 best national universities at USNews.com
Rice #14
UT #56
SMU #61
A&M #69
Baylor #75
TCU #78

But you are correct about this.

There's nothing wrong with that, I just want to know why some people prefer some schools over others

Somebody at US News & World Report has a sense of humor:
A2M has been working hard @ 69 for years...

I'll bite. A 4 year starter, winingest QB in school history, and future NFLer got "scared" in the midst of arse raping Bama's defense. And then his true freshman backup with no experience almost pulled the game out anyway.

Never heard of Southwestern, Trinity, or St Edwards boss

Probably relatively unknown outside of Texas
