If you're not worried about staining the backpack.....the answer is vanilla extract.

Try putting the cat in the bag. No one will know about the smell unless someone lets the cat out of the bag.

editing to let you know that i have tried all of the other home and store remedies listed in this thread (besides the killing the cat advice :)) and the above product really does work. no, i do not sell it, it has just saved a lot of nice things from the dumpster at my house.

I'd run it through a front loader at a laundrymat but if that's not an option.
Found this formula, check on a small area to see if peroxide damages the color of the fabric.
16 0z Hydrogen Peroxide
1 Teaspoon dishwashing liquid
1 Tablespoon Baking Soda
Mix together and soak area, leave on till completely dry if a white residue appears it can be vacuumed or brushed away.
I have used a similar combination on carpet and it worked, but haven't tried on fabric.
And hit it with a good dose of Febreze after you clean it.
Whatever you do, do it quick because the longer it's on , the harder it is to get the smell out.

Clean it. Then put it under a blacklight. Continue cleaning until nothing shows under blacklight.

don't know how people can just kill an animal without a conscience. don't care how upset i got at some animal that peed on something of mine, i'm not about to just take its life. probably just needs to be fixed, a lot of places provide free catch and release fixings..
if it's an inside pet, make sure their litter is clean and they know where it's at. sometimes pets do this when they may have an infection or are sick as well.
any ways, hope the OP gets it all straightened out.

I have an uncle who lives on boggy bayou rd. The Ames rd is across the highway and about a mile back up towards stacy. I was raised there. Thinking about going back to live here pretty soon. I'm sure I knew your grandmother. Sorry for your loss
