How the hell would I know the situation of public schools in BR?
Posted on 1/29/14 at 12:00 am to LSUregit
call the schools, ask what procedure is. Send your kid to private school in BR, trust me. It is worth every penny to keep your kid away from the animals in public schools.
Already you are doing something that 96% of the parents of the kids in public schools don't do, which is show some concern for your daughter's education.
Seriously, my gf is a public school teacher and will never teach there again. She is just over halfway done with her first year. Public school kids will create a terrible learning environment for your daughter.

No. Try the gifted or magnet program. Better then most private schools. Buchanan elementary

You are probably in the St. Aloysius area for Catholic schools. It is an excellent school. Both of my kids went there. Admission Criteria:

Trinity Episcopal is probably your closest Episcopal school:

I know the Episcopal system used to accept applications very early. Not sure if they still do.

My wife and I went to the school we decided on and filled out necessary paperwork. We had to pay an application fee $35 and a enrollment fee $325. Then we just pay $350 monthly tuition. They did give our child a test before accepting her, but that was part of the application

Never too early to start looking, so figure out which schools you're interested in and check their websites or call them to get info on the application process.
Things to keep in mind:
--Some schools (like most of the Catholic schools) look favorably on how involved you are before your child is enrolled. This might mean being a good parishioner or donating to the school's foundation, but it doesn't always guarantee you a spot either.
--Some have preschool or pre-k programs, but they don't always directly feed into the main school (meaning you might still have to re-apply for Kindergarten.)
--Open houses for prospective students are often in the fall, and application periods for the following school year can happen as early as September.
--if your daughter has a fall birthday before the "cut-off" date (usually September 30), some schools encourage an extra year of pre-k before entering Kindergarten.
If she's in a Mother's Day Out program, day care, preschool, play group or any kind of group lessons like dance, talk to as many other parents as you can...a lot of them will have older children and can give you tons of insider info into a specific school's application/admissions process.

Which school? Some are quite ghetto in and of themselves.
I'd recommend LSU preschool to start, not the one on the side of Ceba, the hidden one up the street from the dairy store.
From there... parkview or the school on campus is a good move.
There are some decent schools across the river from you. Schools that focus on test scores are the WORST for preparing kids for college.
One of the top pre-k schools in the nation is hidden away on lsu campus. Taught by DRs in perfectly designed and assembled classes. My wife observes there from time to time and its ridiculous.

Last week I called the catholic elementary school I want my 3 year old daughter to go to and they politely laughed that I was calling a little bit too early. They don't start a waiting last this early. They told me to call back this time next year but to continue to keep attending Sunday mass of course.

I'm pretty sure University Club is either in the St. Jude or St. George Parish.
Other private schools to consider are Lab School/U High or the International School.
Just check the websites for their admissions criteria, start filling out the paperwork, get on lists, attend open houses, or start becoming active in your church parish if you are going to go the Catholic school route.

your name needs to be known when it's your daughter's time to be in kindergarten. If you're applying to a Catholic school then it'll help if you're a parishioner and you attend mass (ie: give money in those envelopes each week). If it's another school I'm sure the same applies.

not just in Baton rouge, having money and whiteness will go a long way into getting into a private school.
the schools are there to make money, not make your snotty nosed kids college bound worthy.

I don't know about BR but the Catholic schools in Lafayette open for registration about a year before the kid will start school. The only way to move up on the list is to become a donating member of the church long before it's time to apply to school.
Or have your wife work at the school
