I usually stay off the roads when there is snow or ice. I figure that less traffic means it will be safer for the people who have to drive

Front wheel drive is better than RWD in ice/snow

Snow tires make a big difference.
Front wheel drive is really good.
Jeeps and pickups need to have weight put over the rear tires.
Good luck going uphill.
ETA if you don't have snow tires or fwd, you should drive as little as possible.

I wish I was down there to watch the fireworks.
So much wrong in this thread.
Protip-If you have a front drive and the back end starts to slide, don't let off the gas. That's like putting your front brakes on. Give it gas to pull out of the slide.
Another tip-Don't pour hot water on your windshield unless you want it replaced.

If you have to drive:
Drive extremely slow. Even if you’re alone on the road.
Take a route with no bridges.
If you have to drive over a short bridge over a coulee, assume that it has ice on it.
When you see an ice patch, coast over it slowly. Accelerating or braking on it will cause you to start to spin.
Luckily we have mainly flat roads. Avoid hills.

Don't take sharp curves fast

Momentum is your friend. It's easier to maintain traction once you're moving than establish it from a stop. (If no one else is on the road, use this advice to ignore traffic lights and stop signs. If you stop in the middle of nowhere, you might not be able to start moving again.)
If you stop on an incline on a somewhat icy road, it's better to go backward and get to level ground than attempt to go forward and end up sliding backward at an angle.
If you drive a RWD pickup truck, get some weight over the back wheels. A few hundred pounds of whatever you have on hand right over the back wheels will make a big difference.
Slow and steady is the way to go.

Park vehicle in driveway. Stay home.

True, so if you have a RWD vehicle just drive in reverse the whole way.

If you have to drive, go slow
If you start to slide, get fully off the gas but feather it as you turn into the slide. DO NOT HIT THE BRAKES!
Allow extra room to stop/maneuver.
And look out for people who are going too fast and let them go by, they'll be in a ditch soon enough b/c they're morons.

A lot of traffic up there on Driskill Mountain?

Driving on this powdered snow will be ok for the most part. Once it all freezes into a block of ice tonight, then it gets dangerous. Today you can drive with caution. Tomorrow you stay yo arse home.

Driving in snow is no big deal at reasonable speeds. It's the ice and the "other guy" that you have to worry about.
