BRCC and LSU’s own Mark Normand. Also known for banging out that AT&T chick you guys all simped on.

He probably lurked here 10 years ago.

I did some standup back in the 90's, toughest thing I've ever done... That's basically the process, it's pretty common that other comics will help you add to your bit. We would hit different places to tryout new bits as well.

I had about a 20-30 minute routine that I did... Some shows great, some not so great...

A guy around the corner in my subdivision did a 15 min gig at the Comedy Club in BIrmingham as one of the warm up comedians. He recycled some jokes, wrote a few new ones, etc. He enjoyed it as a side gig to his normal telecommunications day job. He met his beautiful wife at the club back in the day. She worked in my building downtown and was a real beauty, small frame, blond……never mind, I digress.

I’ve played music in front of thousands. I’ve spoken on panels in front of thousands. Thinking about doing stand-up in front of 10 people is the stuff of nightmares.

Having to do a "clean" bit for troops/vets is kinda ridiculous. If anyone can appreciate a dark, or blue, joke, it would be veterans.

So have I, played drums since I was twelve...

Thing is, anyone can get into music... You either like it or not... No matter what background you're from.

First show I did was in front of about 500 people... Fortunately, It went great, unfortunately after that, it built up too much confidence in me, that first bomb was a hard pill to swallow...

When doing stand up, knowing you audience is key, you can do a bit that kills in Chalmette, but bombs in Uptown New Orleans,,,

I think it was more because Seinfeld and Gaffigan are relatively clean and that’s what their audiences expect. He’s the lowest on the bill and going and doing some raunchy comedy after those two probably is not a good idea. It was also a benefit show, so mostly donors there.

Mike Birgiblia had a special on either Prime or Peacock where he showed how he develops his new material, tours it locally, sees what works or doesn't, fine tunes it. He actually has index cards on stage with him, making notes

Seth Meyers had a great quote in it, something to the affect of "the audience has to feel this is the very first time you are saying the joke for them to buy in". Lots of work goes into it.

It really does.. Most people think they just go up on stage and tell jokes.. You have to have a written bit, and rehearsed... I use to rehearse my set in front of a mirror, it was weird but it helped...

His final version of a "clean" joke involved his wife fricking a cat

He was the opening act but the concept of your statement is valid. You want to have some uniformity* in the raunchiness level of the entertainment acts.

It’s music equivalent is you wouldn’t have Black Sabbath open for John Denver.

*uniformity in a show for a veterans organization? See what I did there?

Marc Maron interviewed hundreds of comics on his old WTF podcast. It was interesting to hear them talk about working out new material.

Many talked about seeing Richard Pryor, Chris Rock or the like show up at The Comedy Store late at night, unannounced, to try out new stuff. Sometimes it would suck, and they wouldn't be their "big" personalities like you'd see in a special. Just a guy standing up there working on things.

It often takes several months to put together and tighten up enough good material for an hour special.
