I think police officers have an incredibly difficult job and they do a great service.*
But I can't help but feel that a large segment of police officers aren't the brightest bulbs in the box. This is a problem because we're giving them increasingly more authority. There are even reports of police officers being denied jobs because their IQs are too high.
I've never had any problems with the police or been arrested, and I'm always as respectful as can be. But I feel like a lot of these guys would be better off with wooden guns, Barney Fife style.
Two guys I went to high school with are cops now and neither were very smart, I would say somewhere in the average range, C+ or B- kids.
I also know that a friend of mine's sister is a deputy down in south Florida and I don't think she was very smart either, I would go as far as to call her a dumb blonde.
They have a tough job and most of them are career guys that don't have a lot of other options, much like most military guys are. Then again, most people drudging through the week fall into this same category. The brightest people go on to better things for the most part or fall apart and are broke as shite. One of my buddies in high school was highly intelligent but lazy as frick, he worked at a record shop for minimum wage until he was about 25 or 30 and moved. not sure where he is now.

The average cop isn't very smart. The few that I know were real dumbasses

Anyone whose every answer is "If you don't blahblahblah, you're going to jail" can't be real bright.

How smart is your average police officer?

Extremely smart for what they are paid. In most places starting pay is near poverty level, so that is the major problem. And, you'd be amazed how shorthanded nearly, or all, police departments are in reference to how many citizens each officer serves.
If you raised the pay, do you now how many more dumbasses you would get in the field? The pay is a problem, but it isnt the reason alot of cops arent smart.

Too stupid for college?
Seems about half the cops I know at least went to college for a bit and did at least OK. I know at least a couple who graduated from college. The two in particular that come to mind work for the FBI and DEA and another actually completed his degree while he was a police officer.

Too unstable for the military?
Almost every cop I know were in the military (I know several).

It depends on the part of the country and the size of the department. I know several police officers that have masters degrees. Alameda county starts out there officers at 70K a year. Some of your rural Sheriff's departments in LA and MS pay $8-$9 an hour.

They're dumb as frick. Why else do you think they became police officers?

there are a lot of intelligent police officers, but they're typically older and involved in special units or are detectives in bigger areas. your small town forces, esp in a place like LA with such a large underclass and lack of intelligence in general, are going to have some really intellectually deficient officers
True. In larger depts, the patrol officers are often going to be as solid as their supervisors. If you got solid cops up the chain of command, they are going to make better cops out of the the patrol cops that are on the street and pretty much the face of the dept. The shite-hooks generally get weeded out, hopefully. You don't have this arrangement in most small towns where a dept may be a handful of good old boys with little to no education or real LE experience before being given a badge.
