I have a mid 1950's Omega that's a 34mm excluding the crown I believe, considerably smaller looking than my Seiko 5. Back then that was a sign of quality and engineering; making a mechanical movement smaller while retaining accuracy and power reserve. If it wasn't a family heirloom I'd wear it more since I find it more comfortable under shirt cuffs than my 40mm+ watches by a considerable margin.

Same here. I have a vintage Seamaster that is 34mm, much more comfortable than my larger pieces.

'66 Omega Connie checking in at 34mm. The dog-leg lugs make it seem a tad bigger but it is small by today's standards. Mine has a hell of a story and runs like a dream. I couldn't care less of how it fits into today's norms.

The one I got was actually very sharp looking and the movement was really smooth. It's just too damn small.

I also wear a Garmin sports watch that is the size of a house.
Nobody cares. It's a Seiko 5, which is great, so I would keep it. Now, if you were buying your first swiss watch and spending a lot on something you'd wear everyday, I get not opting for a smaller size.

Those don't appear to be 36s. It may be the bands. The band on mine is 18mm and may contribute to the illusion.

The article you linked says that Seiko has a 38mm case, which isn't terrible.
Those guido Rolex look terrible.
Case design is key, there are some amazing watches out there, albeit not at $75. I think in the $350-800 you could get a damn nice watch, autos on the upper end of that. I'm talking about great case and dial design.

That particular one does, so I assumed the one I picked up did as well. I was disappointed when it came in at 36.

Sorry, can't link images, but this is the combo. Got it for less than $100 total, so it's not the money. I just don't see any sense in keeping it if I'm not going to every choose it over anything else I've got.

Look into the pez watch. Its about a 40mm... not too big, but not too small. A lot of people are programmed to think it's not acceptable for a grown man but that's just a misconception. It definitely gives you the biggest bang for your buck. Just giving you a potential alternative...

The Seiko 5 is a great watch, especially for field use.
It's a reliable automatic that is water resistant and doesn't get in the way with bulk.
For $50 on Amazon, I give it an A minus, at least.
Plus the standard black face model looks great with cheap NATO cloth straps. I'm partial to the original NATO, myself.

Those are Rolex Day-Dates. They only made them in 36mm until this year when they started making a 40, which looks dumb.
An entertaining - and exhaustive - review
Not sure how "real manly" you consider the Prince of Wales, but he too wears a 36mm. Omega Seamaster... Quartz (a gift from his mother).

36mm is a women's watch imo. Anything between 40-42 is the sweet spot for watch aficionados. I own a 38mm and it feels small. I've stayed away from the Seiko 5 for this exact reason. Actually I bought one once and tried it on for an hour. Then sold it

This was my initial thought. But I keep going back and forth. I only have one friend IRL who is a watch aficionado. His advice was if you're not sure you want it, you don't want it.

That's true for the most part. But most that want the 36-38 really love the vintage vibe of the old 2 dial chrono and watches of that style from the 40's through the 60's.
