I just feel like you should be able to do it for less than $833 a month for 10 years

Well, one of us has experience with a girl that made it to the D1 level, the other has a feeling. I think I'll trust me on this one.

ETA: Forgot about training clinics, surgery and PT costs for the inevitable injuries, etc.

The parents of Jaxxon who sucks arse pick up the cost for those that are good

Or in my case, the parents of Vincent Wellington cover the costs

He's not dumb with his money, so that's highly unlikely.

I'd say the vast majority of parents justify this obsessive behavior by claiming that a collegiate scholarship is an ultimate goal.

I'm spending 20 grand on my kid's (childhood) sports career so we can have an outside shot at getting a partial athletic scholarship. Wish me luck

And baseball is a double lose lose proposition. If you're a top pitcher you can get a full scholarship somewhere, but that's it. Most other players get a 1/4 scholarship or something like that.

But yeah traveling ball is expensive. My niece is a very good little basketball player, her mom pays $50 a month year round just for the privilege of being on a traveling team (a good traveling team, but still )then there is the expense of actually traveling and watching her play,, she's always on the road to Kansas or Oklahoma, or last year they went to Dallas for a week long tournament.

Plus of course the expense of camps and such. If you're going into that thinking it's an investment towards a college scholarship you're probably gonna be disappointed.

I try to tell parents that when they are pushing 12 year old Johnny to play short stop on the traveling team. Lady come on, he's just out here having fun. Sheesh

THe elite kids do not have to pay the exorbitant costs

Those costs are adsorbed by the parents of the kids who likely have zero shot but are willing to pay it

Academies, coaches, and programs will let the kids that actually have potential come for free or discounted price in order to have the kid at their program

ETA: Obviously there will be exceptions to the rule

You should see young Craydyn! He would be batting 1.00 if that family wouldn’t have spent their college funds on a pitching coach for Jarlaedyn!

Well, he makes a lot more than that every year, so it's not really that big a deal to him.

Like I said, it adds up quick. A few months ago, they had tournaments in CO and Orlando over a few week stretch. Each one was a week long minimum. That's basically a couple grand each just on that.

$100,000 on youth sports is dumb in pretty much every instance.

To each their own though.

Brock and Kaydynn are looking for a new team. They had to sit the bench two games this season and that's completely unacceptable.

Not really. He can legit afford it and enjoys seeing his daughters happy. Scruffy should know better than to make blanket statements like that.

I hear you

But I dont think you HAVE to make all those trips to be a high recruit

My wives cousin in law plays for Northwestern State

She played high school ball and on one team that traveled the state for part of the year

You should get them on the team with Slayden, Paxxxton, Traxton, and that kid with the weird name, Christopher.

There's no need to consider if anything you've said is true because it's irrelevant given that those children would be in the minority. The majority of children would still be affected by the opportunity cost of the their spending endless amounts of time, with the accompanying financial implications, on a pursuit with little ultimate benefit.

All the "big name" prospects go to these tournaments, because all the scouts are at them.

How parents are ruining youth sports
This is an over used meme and full of hyperbole. Partly because it identifies a villain that everyone agrees exists (the overbearing youth sports parent) and sucks, but that no one believes they are. Youth sports in general aren't being ruined. Sure, there are a group of parents that take things too seriously and have unrealistic expectations. That has always been true. The world of big money travel and club tournaments has highlighted it more, but not nearly to the extent people act like it has.
